KLBL went on the air as V 99-3 a little after 12 noon today.

They're playing 1,999 songs in a row and positioning themselves as "#1 for Continuous Hits".
______________

Just as I feared, IT IS NOT URBAN AC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :(
(shaking my head in disgust, emphatically)

It sounds like this is kind of a "Jack" type of station, minus the oldies and classic rock.

Anyway you look at it, it will competing with THE BLAZE for the younger demos. Sure, it is not going to take away much from THE BLAZE, because there is no hip-hop on V99.3, but you had a chance to do the right thing for the 25+ African-Americans in Northeast Texas, but you didn't. This format is too "all over the place" for NE Texas.

All right Access-1/KYKX, you've still got a chance in the Urban AC game. Don't blow it like 99.3 did.

I'm SO Mad, I can't even see straight. From "The Bull" to "Bullsh*t".

Imaging sounds like the same guy who does the Blaze.

Just heard the Backstreet Boys "I Want It That Way"..something most true Urban AC's wouldnt touch. V-99.3 stunting mix is better than the white bread pap Sunny and Breeze spin. V-99.3's isnt Urban AC at all. More like a Rythmic Hot AC.

We used to b--ch and moan on this board about having too many country stations in the Piney Woods, now we can complain about having too many AC's!

No jocks...just 2 or 3 sweepers...no jingles

Weird playlist. I've heard everything from Levert, Chaka Kahn, Aaliah, Toni Braxton, Mariah Carey to John Mayer, Backstreet Boys, Uncle Kracker, Dido and Seal

Bingo. All Access says the station is being consulted by Robert Scorpio, quoting "It's an Urban AC with a twist of Mainstream AC."

I'm glad to see you say that. I was describing it to my wife as a hotter version of Sunny 106.5. Actually, it reminded me of the failed "Jammin' 93-1" from a few years back, only more modern. I'm glad to see I've not lost my mind. Thanks, Billy!

If this is to be the true format and not a stunting format, what -are- they thinking?!
______________

Somebody give snoman a beer before he totally and completely loses his mind.

Actually, I'd have to take issue about drawing the younger crowd. I'm 32 and like this better than the BlaZe. Although time will tell as to how long I'll listen to it.
______________

To me, nails on a chalkboard sounds better than The Blaze, but I hate Hip-Hop & Rap, but it just seems to me like they are mixing too much variety together... Luther Vandross & Maroon 5? I guess I will have to hear it before I can really pass judgement, but why would you not tap into an audience in search of a station?! I just don't get it.

Padding, fluff and name dropping.

And the point is?

Folks, I caught V99-3 last night and was not impressed. It's a puzzling sitiuation when a station has basically one promo that paints them as filling a void in the market. For now it has limited appeal and no polish or imagination.

Am I wrong, or isn't it now entirely possible that at one given moment you could hear Kelly Clarkson on any of FIVE radio stations in Tyler-Longview?

I'm in need of a beer, too. It seems to me that V-99.3 is literally train-wrecking it for a mass appeal audience let alone the African-American audience in NE Texas. If they are going to mix something that doesn't fit into the fold, then I think they'll be in for a short leash in the next Arbitrons.

What I think Robert is doing to this now is just add some temporary variety to the format for a while.

All they are doing is that they are getting some of the bugs out to make it more listener friendly. It will take time for them to get a really true urban AC playlist rolling in order to grab the 25-49 age group. I say let the frequency breathe for a minute.

As for KYKX.....why the hell do we have to push this issue? Access 1 appears to be treating it more and more like a beaten stepchild let alone all of the others. If Access 1 has a plan of action of turning a once dominant country station into an urban adult powerhouse and program the whole thing right on the first hit, then V-99 will have to flip frequencies. After all, they're 50,000 watts, KYKX is 100,000. The Blaze, a measly combined wattage of almost 17,000.

Anyone checked their website, yet?

Well, let's see....

1. KTYL
2. KLBL
3. KLJT/KFRO-FM
4. KOOI
5. KISX

Is this the list you had in mind???
______________

It's kinda like a small tugboat pulling a superfreighter....makes a whole lotta noise, but gets nowhere quickly.
______________

In no particular order, yes.

I say give this format time to "gel" with jocks - it took awhile for the Blaze to get going too. I also hope they tighten up that music and dump a lot of the pop-CHR oriented stuff.

Right now those V-99.3 promos sound way too CHR - it almost sounds like Reynolds wants V-99.3 to have the option of flipping to straight CHR if this new format doesnt take off here.

> I say give this format time to "gel" with jocks - it took

ummm...The Blaze didn't need ANYTIME to get going, if you think
#1 in it's first book and #1 ever since "getting there"

Just think ever since 2000 - this station has been #1

Good Luck to the folks at V!!

Rio

Now somebody needs to address the other hole and get a rocker in this market. NOt a balls to the wall Active station. The New Rock product simply is not that good these days. But I doubt it would take much to pass KKTX.

In case you haven't noticed...The Blaze is not #1 in every demo and daypart like they were once. In fact, in some areas the've fallen to 4th or 5th in the market. Yea...they are #1 12+ but that's just for bragging rights.
