V 99-3 vs. Hot 107.3 Jamz

Now that I've had a week to evaulate the playlists, personalities, imaging, and morning shows, I think I like v99.3 all around mroe than I like Hot. But both are good stations.

Tom Joyner's show is great. I like Express yourself.
However, the local newsanchor could work on her delivery a little bit. She sounds good, but needs to sound more conventional.

V 99-3 is also not taking many of the optional breaks during TOm Joyner. Hopefully, the sales force will come through and sell those avails in order to keep Tom on the air in E-TX.

I think V 99-3's Midday and Afternoon personalities.

On the other hand, Steve Harvey runs a great show also. Nephew Tommy is a trip. The Judge Joe Brown segment is also hard to beat.

Soto in the afternoon has a good personality. I like his show.

So my radio keeps flipping back and forth between the two stations. It is funny, really. I am a former country Radio PD....and my presets are 1) KNUE; 2) KVNE; 3) v 99-3; 4) KSWP/Lukfin; 5) KBJS 6) Hot 107.3 Jamz.

Sorry for the foolishness, I just wanted to get your thoughts on these two stations.
Edited by musicsweep on 04/07/06 08:30 PM.

For the first time in over three years, I finally got a chance to get a vacation. I was in Longview over this past week and noticed some improvements of the two stations. Both are aiming for the same audience. V99 is pretty good only they are leaning to a more rhythmic AC than the former Kiss 107. I have to give it to them for putting the formats on the air. I noticed something else about 103.1 (KDVE). I noticed then that they are talk, but that's "whole 'nother topic."

I have to give props to Clear Channel and Reynolds for FINALLY coming to their senses to put urban AC on the map. They finally did something right to get the 25-49 adult listeners a chance to hear some REAL music!

While this may technically be another thread, the question now is who's going to fill the vacant Top 40 position? There's a hole for it now and I don't see East Texas supporting two, as you pointed out "identical stations." The market isn't big enough for two Urban AC's to both get ratings and real revenue long term. Mainstream Top 40 should be filled. It can be successful and make money if someone knows what they're doing...of course that's the bigger question I guess.

I like both stations the best but I like V99.3 the best. It has a nice playlist.
______________

KAFX - Lufkin is Hot AC, but more of a "modern hot AC", and has a 4 hour Top40 program on Saturday nights, it's definitely not like Mix in Tyler... I'd say it's a Hot AC with a Top40 atmosphere. It's said that it wouldn't work well as a Top40 because of advertisers, but it sure would be interesting...

So where do all the former KISS ratings go? Which station will benefit more from there not being a Top 40 station in the market? Blaze, Mix, Sunny?

My guess is a split between Blaze and Mix. The rap/hip-hop audience will go to the Blaze and the pop/alternative audience will choose Mix. Of course, some of them may just buy XM and be done with it all together.
