Sound like the liners as well....

Because Barry Mayo is running the show. He was the consultant for KRBV/Dallas-Fort Worth when Thomas Bacote. I'm surprised they did not use the same logo.

While not the same logo, it does look similar.

Almost, but not quite. The V100 here had a solid block "V" and some waves coming from it. The 100 was in multiple shades of blue.

"V" is nothing new. Summit Communications which is now re-incarnated as Radio One has had this format since the 80s. It is a heritage Urban format that varies slightly by market. Big deal. Just as the Kiss format is for each market. Just corporate radio with tight rotations and niche programming to fit the advertising landscape. No wonder I left radio so many years ago. All quite boring. Almost as dull as XM or Sirius. HD radio. Now there is a brainstorm that will work. Hahahaha. Sorry, just worked in both Dallas and Los Angeles and with the format long enough to see the simplicity of it all.

It brings back bad memories for me. It was the end of KJMZ 100.3 JAMZ. Back in the late 80's/early 90's, both K104 and 100.3 JAMZ had a tremendous battle. Both stations were great! And, Summit foolishly made that change. Now 100.3 doesn't do "Jack" for me anymore and K104 is non-stop Rap Concert.

Gramnum Communications made that change. They bought KJMZ and KHVN in the early 90's. Gramnum knew they were going to flip 100.3 Jamz when they got the Tom Joyner Morning Show. Summit was long out of the picture on that Sept. 1, 1995 day.

Wow. I didn't know that. I thought Summit was the one that actually sold them to Infinity. I stand corrected.

Was Joyner's show already syndicated when he joined KJMZ?

Yes it was. When Joyner left K104 to do the national show, he had an 8 or 9 month non-compete. K104 talked about bringing Joyner back but K104 decided to stick with Skip Murphy.

Joyner was also bad talking 10-fizzo, so they felt like they had no choice but to keep Skip. Fly Jock was talking about being all national; hence, the lovely over-baked tagline "The Home Team" was born.

As for 100.3, that was one of my first gigs in radio... Summit ran that thing in the ground. We had 104 for many books during the glory days of Tom Casey. Then Bacote rode in to town and V was born. Thank you, Mr. Mayo.

However, I believe this goes back to PLEX's creed, they really are CON-sultants.
