V102.5 Sounding Good Lately

Well Well I think that V102.5 has finally found there format and the right way to do things. I have been listening to them everyday at work and there playing a big BIG big variety and not sounding as bad as they were. They could still work on there sound a little but it's going good. I can really see progress. I was listening to the River for a while, but I just can't take the same songs every hour. That is just ridiculous that they play the same songs every hour.

I really wish the Party would have not gone away. It was a great station and they didn't play the same songs every hour. Which the beat plays the same songs every hour too. I guess it's just a Clear Channel thing. Mix it up and let's make variety River 107.5!!

I agree to a point that V has really stepped up and found THEIR format. Although Lulu drives me crazy. I can not listen to her, But I really enjoy Dean and the midday guy. But musically, I think they need to focus a bit. Are they an 80s station with a lot of variety or a variety station with a lot of 80s? Fill in the blank. V 102.5 is the _____ station.

I would love to listen but can barely pick them up. does anyone know of plans to upgrade the signal? I believe no matter how good the product, they need a stronger signal to really compete with the River.

It sounds as though you know and love this format of radio. Since I know little to nothing about this radio format, I take your word that 102 is making strides to improve. Hell, I do not not even know the official name of this format. AC?

What you said about 107.5 is a story that is far too true. I know we have clear channel employees that post in here and I am in no way trying to insult them, but the same records played in high repetition is a problems that Clear Channel stations, as well as other big corporately owned stations currently have at this time.

Satellite radio is an answer, but far too few people have satlilte radio installed. Thank God for satellite radio. It is a God send!!! The rock, blues, soul, country stations are just tremendous!!!

Most listeners are pretty much satisfied with the current state of radio. They will listen at the office or listen while on their way to work. This boring brand of music radio is perfectly acceptable to these type of listeners.

I think many people actually enjoy repetitive music. I have seen people at work change the office radio when a song is played that they are not familiar with or know.

Other than listening to Steve Gill, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and listening go 97.1 Deep Cuts on Sunday evenings, I do not listen that much to radio anymore.

XM, I pod and mp3 music is where I am at these days. I still wish that we could return to the glory days of music radio where the program directors could tuer their creative talents lose again.

Not going to happen anytime soon.

i agree about satellite radio i have sirius and it is awesome. i love listening to sirius hits 1 and the pulse (90's). hits 1 does not play the same songs every hour and 90's is a great variety of 90's and todays music. the only problem with satellite radio is i can't listen to it in the office while i work. i tried to get one of those booombox things for the satellite radio but it wouldn't pick up since there's not any windows in my office or around me.

Is true you satellite radio customers get a few cents off your bill everytime you post about the service you use? ::)

nope unfortunately satellite radio is much better than regular radio today. it is so sad that satellite radio has a better variety than regular radio.

I do not know why Jet is rolling his eyes at the thought that some of us are willing to pay for satellite radio. I know he was being sarcastic and that's fine. His opinion!

This reminds me of back in the seventies when we all had 3 TV stations, 1 Public TV outlet and buddy that was prety much it!!!

We had Lavergn and Shirley and other less than great TV programs. Some people wanted to watch first run movies on TV. Cable provided that and the rest is history.

Same thing with the current state of radio, They offer Lavergn and Shirly, satelite offers first run movies. LOL

To fill in the Blank, V-102.5 is "Hot AC". Over the past 15 years or so, there are several versions of AC that have been devloped by national programmers and consultants. You have Soft AC, Hot AC, Rhythm Mix AC, Urban AC, etc. They are all different in such a way that they are design to reach different demos. These formats are design for terrestrial (AM or FM) stations, being that there are only so many channels in one area for over the air stations to operate on.

Satellite Radio (XM & Sirus) has the advantage over terrestrial radio due to the have many channels to program "niche" formats like all 80's Only, all 90's Only, Bluegrass Only, all 50's only, etc.

With a terrestrial station, one must come up with a format to reach a larger demo than say one channel on XM, due to the terrestrial station only has one channel to provide service. XM has many.

HD/IBOC is suppose to allow a terrestrial station many streams (besides thier main channel) to offer alternative programming to listeners, but so far, HD Radio really hasn't been on the market long enough for it to make an impact on the masses. We will just have to wait and see.

The 80's formats were ahead of their time and should be tried again. Cox has had continued success in Tampa, Jacksonville and another market or two.

Anybody need a website?

I want to bring up this old subject again, but in my honest opinion, V-102.5 is the best sounding station in the Nashville area, that is geared to the 30-54 demo. Most of all of you will disagree, and complain about the poor signal into Downtown, which Bud Walters can not do anything about due to signal protection. Most folks don't understand engineering. The trasnmitter can not be moved any closer east of Charlotte, TN.

Mix 92.9 plays WAY TOO MUCH sleepy time music and really is a SOFT AC station. V-102.5 is Hot AC. I wanted to say that Dean Warfield has done the best job programming that station since it's inception as little WDKN-FM in Dickson. The music mix is great, and if your an 80's fan, like me, they are doing a great job of playing all those 80's favorites.

I'm not a programmer, but consultants seem to believe thaat 60's, 70's and 80's music doesn't blend well together due to a huge gap in the demographics. I tend to disagree, but I'm just one opinion out of thousands.

Just wanted to say hats off to Dean for doing a good job!

How does the translator do downtown? It sure has a monster signal everywhere else.

(they never promote it, I wonder how much of their potential downtown audience knows it's there?)

I couldn't say best, but as I've said elsewhere, I could say very good. Still don't understand why it's in the ratings cellar, unless the very audience they are trying to reach is either listening to other media or they're simply not home when the ratings folks call to inquire if they'll complete a diary. It's hard for me to see how they could improve it much more in order to bring in ratings. Is Lulu still doing bits such as love horoscopes? If so, scrapping that junk might could improve ratings.

Still the same story about the signal downtown. You can pick it up easily in the car. It's the office where you can't necessarily pick it up -- and that cuts out a large potential audience. Now I know the FCC often frowns on shutting frequncies down, but could it get any closer in if they shut down the 102.1 signal they own, then move 102.5 to 102.3?

Absolutely. The signal ruins the impact to the office crowd and they seem to flip on what they've listened to all day when they jump in the car too. Dean is doing a great job. It's a shame that more people aren't listening. I am - but I don't count for much ;D

The 102.1 signal is a translator, so it's secondary to 102.5 anyway - they could shut it down without any flak from the FCC. Would that get them any closer though? It *was* on 102.3 in the past, there's some reason they moved it to 102.5 before increasing power. (and it wasn't because of the old "no more than 3kw on 102.3" rule because that rule was already gone by the time they moved)

Does anyone agree that the signal got actually worse when they went HD? Wonder why they couldn't put a translator near
downtown on 102.5 itself. The coverage map looks like it would allow for it.

No way, WLCT in Lafayette, TN is on 102.1 and that would be first adjacent to 102.3. The reason for the translator in the beginning was to penetrate the downtown area that couldn't receive the 102.5 signal back in the early 90's when the station was easy listening.

You can hear WLCT-FM in Downtown Nashville when that translator is off. Randy Swaffard, General Manager at WLCT is a good friend of mine and I know he would love to get his hands on that translator. This would give WLCT, Country 102 a signal into the metro.

Caught myself wondering tonight if v102.5 is like a movie that is critically-acclaimed but doesn't do well at the box office...

Hope not, because it deserves better.
