Vacation Time :-) Lets Have A Get Together

OK gang we tried this last year and the new Radio-Info was born... I am coming home to SC the week of Aug 20-27... I am interested in all of us who post on the SC board have some sort of get together... Since Columbia keeps changing what are some good places for us radio geeks to get together and put faces behind the post??? Since I will have a week to do what ever I want any day would be fine for me, but I know there are those who work so maybe we all can get together on either Saturday or Sunday which would be the 25th or 26th... Lets pull this thing off this time... Thoughts and ideas!!! CC1

Carroll, these days, I seldom venture forth from the relative isolation of the Island of Misfit Toys, um, I mean the Outer Limits, er, I mean the Outer Banks. Usually I get together with a bunch of radio buds of mine (most of us worked at WKZQ or WROQ/WAQQ in the 80's) in Myrtle Beach the last weekend before Christmas. Most years I swing through Cola Town a couple of days before the "Conclave Weekend" to see my peeps. Having said that, I actually would be looking for an excuse to swing through Columbia in late August. I might even stick around for the 'Cocks' season opener on 9/1.

Question: Think Donna Rodgers at Budweiser/Cola can arrange enough beer for that week?

Scott I am only 10 miles from the WI border where beer reigns suprieme ;D. I think it would be a blast for all of us on here to meet... Anybody else!!! We have about three months to put something together... CC1

I remember this type of get together was mentioned last year or the year before on this board, I was up for it, but never heard a date announced, did it ever transpire?
I am up for one again this year, just let me know what date it may be on so I can get a flight early!

I am flying into SC on Aug 20th through the 27th... I have family there and will spend some time with them... I will also visit my old stomping ground at PUB and we will go from there... Anytime works for me... Maybe that Saturday Aug 25th could work... I am very open... As for the last attempt it did not happen because of RI revamping and a lot of other people going other places... I hope we can pull it off this time... Like I said we have three months so I think this time it can happen... CC1

Steve, the true beauty of radio lies in the fact that important, ahem, broadcast consultation conclaves such as the one we're describing here for August can be underwritten by important creative, um, catalysts like Budweiser.

Hey Kahuna, check out Carroll's "Crazy question" thread. We've all been impressed by your work on "That Was Radio" and we're interested in compiling a similar site for South Carolina Radio(although your site has plenty of South Carolinians, both local and adopted, like Kilgo at Z100 and Jonathan Rush when he was in Raleigh...I think you even had/have John Van Pelt<formerly KZQ> when he was in Raleigh, too).

Any help or advice would be appreciated. Also, I've got some stuff for you from Northeastern NC for your site, btw.

:D If you nice radio people want to hold your get together in the Grand Strand area, I can provide the studio where such a great conference could be recorded, memories shared, and a "best of" cd produced which could become the envy of all those who do not attend! We've no shortage of refreshments here, and the ocean waves could provide a relaxing background balanced by the stimulation of some of the fine sights to be seen on the beach!

Hi Bill,

That's a very generous offer and a stupendous idea! If we, as the Columbia radio nerds, can't get together to take you up on your offer, I can just about guarantee that the group of us that comprise the Myrtle Beach Mafia would LOVE to do that when we get together for our annual Conclave at the Embassy Suites/Kingston Plantation in MB. If we could make this happen for the Columbia group, then the resulting recording can be posted on Carroll's South Carolina Radio site when it comes to fruition.

Scott, You guys just let me know when and we'll set it up. You could use the OD Pavilion, and there's a Bonefish Grill just down the street from our studios.

Thanks, Bill. Sounds great! We'll be in town either the weekend of 12/15 or 12/22.

OK gang here is my sked!!! Looks like I am going to fly into QC around noonish on Monday Aug 20th and I will depart the 27th around 3'ish... Gary come on and you can hang with us... Now all we need is a place... Steve what are some good hang outs in Cola Town... Looks like for me Saturday is going to be my best shot at pulling this off... I wanted to do something like this last year, but that was when RI had a format change ;D. Anyplace you guys come up with will work for me as well as any time you guys want to set it up... Steve and Robyn if you guys would like to email me off list feel free to do so that way we can get things rolling... The bigger the turn out the better... If there are any lurkers out there who never post here is your chance so we can see who would like to join us... CC1

There are some good hangouts. It depends on the atmosphere you want to go for and what time of evening.

For us old folks, the Vista has Wild Wing, Liberty Tap Room, Club House, and SakiTumi on the nicer scale of things. Nonnah's may be too quiet for this raucous crowd. MacDougall's is pretty chill most of the time. If it is later in the evening, Wild Wing is probably too loud to have a conversation. I don't even consider Tsunami. It's way way too loud. Uncle Louie's is an authentic dive bar.

In Five Points, you've got your standbys (Group/Bar None/Goat's) plus Jake's (the old Rockafella's) and opening June 11th, Congaree Grill.

In Northeast, there's D's and Solstice off Sparkleberry and Wild Wing in Sandhills.

I know I have left some folks favorites off, but these have been my faves as of lately.

Those sound like some cool places... BTW I forgot my email addy is [email protected]. I guess my ole' brain is not doing to well... It is nice to have even two days off from work... Maybe between you, Robyn and the rest we all can decide where to meet, time, etc... I think a place that could handle us where we all can be ourselves and have a little fun sounds like a cool place... For me any place that has good food works for me... CC1

Wow, Steve, I thought I recognized you at the Alcoholics Unanimous meetings.

Hahah! That's what Doug Kelly said when he dropped by XRY this afternoon. We remininsced on teh air for about 12 minutes. Self-indulgent radio, but damn fun!

You want to hear about alchohol soaked, we sponsored the Kin Smith Memorial Golf Tourney yesterday. No one was sober. But only one golf cart was rolled this year!
