Valley Sports Radio

Now that DeMaurice Smith and the NFLPA are doing their dangedest (can't remember if RI has a profanity filter) to imperil this country's favorite game, I'm going to have to tune away from sports radio for a while. The NFL is 85% of the reason I listen anyway, and I've had enough of court rooms in my life. Ring me when it's over. But before I go,

Does anybody else get really annoyed when, as Gambo and Ash go into a break, they pre-sell something like this, "On the other side of the break, is there a Valley coach that could be leaving, unexpectedly?" Jeez, do I find that annoying. 4 out of 5 times, I already know the story that they're coyly pre-selling, and the other time, I don't care to stick around and hear it because I hate it when a local newscast uses the same lame device ("Find out what common food item is probably lurking in your fridge, poised to kill you, tonight at 10"). I tune away every time. I hate that.

I prefer Bickley and MJ (in no small part, because I've never heard them do that).

Powell and Marotta are good, so far.

Sorry for the nearly pointless post. I just hate that thing Gambo and Ash do (provocative question, transparently intended to get you to sit through commercials, and then the payoff is something you already know, or something that would only happen in defiance of astronomical odds). Had to vent, see if anyone else has noticed, and maybe hates it too.

No love for what has become the Valley's fourth (almost) all-sports radio station, NBC 1260? ;D

Speaking of the Nifty 1260, its website indicates that Jeffry O'Brien is back on mornings
after a recent stint in PMD. No more Bob & Tom. Or was it Bob & Sheri?

He also got his third hour back, being on 6-9 AM again. You just don't know these things
when you can't hear the station at 6 AM. Love those 50 watts from A.J. :D

It was always "The Dead Air Show" when I checked the station during the 5am hour!

I would occasionally tune in when Jeffry was doing afternoons (especially when Mac & Gaydos went to commercial breaks). Now, there's just too much good morning competition, that his show is fifth or sixth down my list.

This station has gone through so many changes in the past nine months it's interesting to see what they'll do next. They went from oldies to lifestyle talk to becoming a (very bad) clone of The Fan 1060. At least the latter has a couple shows worth tuning into in the morning.

Lockout or no, the NFL is a non-subject between now and July, other than the week of the draft (which is still on, BTW). Trouble is, our local sports-blabberers can't keep from talking about it even when nothing's going on. And there's nothing going on right now outside of a courtroom. There's March Madness Mayhem, the Diamondbacks, the Coyotes, and what passes for an NBA franchise to talk about. Sports radio doesn't need the NFL at this particular moment. Trouble is, that's all that some of our sports-blabberers know and care to talk about (**cough**Wolfley**cough**Jurecki**).

No worse than what our TV newscasts do. And they do that all the time.

Are they still on the air? I thought the only reason for XTRA 910 to exist was to clear Jim Rome and Premiere Fox Sports Radio. ;)

Powell and Marotta are good, so far.

I agree, but they're going to have to tone the language down a bit. I'm no prude, and I'm not offended by "g****mn" or a veiled reference to "the F word," but somebody will be, including possibly the FCC. They uttered both this morning while ranting over the NCAA tournament picks.

Again, that's no different than what we have to endure from Channels 3, 5, 10, 12, and 15 on a daily basis.

Gambo and Ash are doing what they're told and teasing the upcomign segment. It's an old broadcasting trick, and it works.

I find that having Gambo and Ash up against Bickley and MJ works on the drive home because the two stations usually are working different format clocks (or so it seems). So if KTAR is in a spot break, you can dial up to XTRA and often hear conversation (and vice versa).

I think Bickely and MJ tease segments, maybe not as blatantly as KTAR.... Maybe Ash is better at the teases than anyone because of the four people mentioned in this post, he's the only one who started as a professional broadcaster.

What Gambo and Ash are doing is called "appointment radio". Which has been proven in many formats to be a great way to get people to stick it out through the stop set, or at the every least, return shortly after.

Thanks. Familiar with the concept. It's their execution. Always a question, and clumsily asked. Usually something like the "What are you doing on your taxes that may get you audited? Tune in at 10." local TV news b.s. I think it's weak. Honest to God, I'd listen to them more (they pull the heavyweights, when it comes to the NFL), but that gimmicky pitch before the break is so annoying.
