Vandals knock WCVC-AM 1330 off the air

The transmitter building at Tallahassee's WCVC-AM 1330 was burglarized during the overnight hours on Saturday night (April 16.)

Inside the transmitter building, a small audio board (the one feeding the transmitter) was stolen, as was the patch cord connecting the board to the processing unit, and a satellite receiver used for the EWTN feed.

Engineers: keep an eye on those unmanned transmitter sites. Just a heads-up.

Did the thieves also steal any copper from the transmitter site? Copper theft from AM tower sites appear to be on the rise, at least in Florida. Hopefully WCVC will return to the air soon! What is the current format?

Mark,

No, apparently no copper was taken. Cumulus has their 1410 AM diplexed on the same tower, and is a 24 hour station. It's kind of amazing that 1410's equipment was untouched.

I used to work for 1330, and now occasionally help the current local overseer, who is a personal friend, with technical stuff. WCVC still has an absentee owner, but is operated by local Kepha Communications under a time brokerage agreement. I got a call fairly early this morning asking if I had a spare audio board.

WCVC's current format is Catholic - EWTN.

They should be back on the air within the next couple of days.

I know this isnt the 1st time this happen they were off the last weekend and this weekend as well. Why they wanted to keep burglarized WCVC-AM. I think WCVC need to find another transmitter building beside share it with AM-1410 WHBT location.

Louis,

They tried to. They can't find another location that works for both 1330 and 1410. The biggest problem is that there is a 1330 in Milton, Fla. That doesn't give them much leeway without a major
change. You can't just "find another transmitter building" for an AM station.

1410 is the station that's leasing space on the tower, incidentally, not the other way around.

The downtime last weekend wasn't a burglary. Transmitter was blowing fuses.

Keep in mind, I just help my friend when he needs it. I retired from WCVC in July of 2004, before it was leased out to this group of "we don't know a thing about how radio works" people.

Sorry...after re-reading the article I see they said the roll of copper was NOT taken.

Hey Chris,

They broke into the concrete block building this time. There's no studio left in the mobile home.
