Vegas changes

I hear Beasley tried to take a shot at Mark and Mercedes, but CBS is paying 'em 500k a piece! I could see 250 each, but 500? whoa!!
Speaking of Beasley, now that Mike O Brian is on KKLZ(if they bring back those famous "breakfast flake whippings...) what will happen to Beth Lano?....is she about to be teamed up with former Las Vegas DJ, Kevin Murphy, who is doing his show solo, after P.D. Jeff Cochran terminated Laura Gannon there?
I hear Hot 97.5 got rid of Mike P...big mistake! I love when they say "blazin todays hottest" and play Dr. Dre "Nothing but a G Thang"...lol...hear the radio going right back to 98.5
Now that Jack has tanked, will CBS give up on them? What about pulling the plug on Xtreme?(can only listen to that station at night, otherwise, they suck)
Vegas, like most, can't support 2 country stations, KWNR's cluster loves to cut overhead wherever they can? Will Coyote or KWNR be left standing?
When Sunny's Christmas numbers go away(spring book) will the AC race tighten between Star, The Oasis, and Sunny? Sunny is DEFINITELY the HARDEST sounding...Why they are? I dont know...
I look forward to some thoughts on the above...Thanks!

Anyone want to take bets on which station flips first in '07?

My money is on KKLZ or KVGS. KKLZ has made some horrible moves over the past year and a half with their staff and unless they bounce back next book I doubt they will be around much longer. The Warrior will be missed. (Until he pops up at The Point or KOMP)

KVGS has failed. It was fun while it lasted but now it's time for them to pack their bags. Riviera needs to bring back oldies in Las Vegas. KQOL had a solid last book before they flipped to 'The Party'. Unless Riviera hates making money they should fill that signal with oldies before someone else does. I know it's harder to sell those older demo numbers but it's still easier than selling nothing at all.

KVGS isn't going anywhere. You see a low 12+ number and jump to conclusions. First of all, it's a terrible signal. Nothing put on 107.9 is going to do that well. Second, this station isn't owned by CC, it's owned by a small company that doesn't have to worry about pleasing stock holders and selling millions of spots a day. Riveria is dedicated to the station. If KXTE ever drops music completly, there will be quite a void. I do think KVGS's music could use some fine tuning though. Their playlist doesn't seem to embrace the freedom that they have.

Hey...I'm checking out the Vegas board today and I'm noticing changes here...changes there...I'm currently in TX looking to make a move to Vegas, anybody got any tips on who may be looking or any potentioal employers who might be on this board...if you're looking, I'd love to have you check out my stuff. Thanks....hope all is well in LV!!! Thanks 4 your time!!

Marko83,

I've had a look at the other Vegas numbers, have you? I jump to no conclusions, KVGS has been at the very bottom of every single money demo, not just 12+ for over a year, if the station was going to catch fire it would have happend by now. I realize that KVGS is owned by a company that has another low rated alternative in Phoenix, and that they don't need to sell millions of spots a year but they do need to sell a few dozen to pay their power bills. The simple truth is that that you can only bleed money for so long. Yes their signal is weak, but look at KJUL which has equally spotty coverage in Las Vegas but they pull in decent numbers due to the fact that they serve an audience that wasn't being served. I'll buy you a beer 6 months from now if they are still around.

KVGS had better numbers before they flipped to AREA 108...(just what we didnt need---another rock station) but if XTREME goes away, they may finally crack a 2 share.
They just need to pick which side of the fence they want to walk on----currents or classic alterative....if you hear a kick ass red hot chili peppers song, then you hear something new and unfamiliar, its such a turn off....

;D The way you worded that reminds me of my brother. I doubt they will choose either "currents or classic alternative" as no other station in this market seems to...

Mix...some pop/chr, some hot ac, and alternative crossovers once KVGS warms them up. This station is all over the board yet it's ratings stay strong.

KOMP...where is all this grunge coming from? clearly a strong attack to Xtreme...

Xtreme...straddling the "Xtreme" sound with KVGS's once they came into town. Taking Back Sunday? Pepper? These certainly aren't "Xtreme"...

As far as new being a turnoff I'd have to disagree. Most stations can't do this (aside from the obvious Oldies stations and a few others). This influx keeps your format alive by bringing in new artists and new potential superstars as the Chili Peppers. What if alternative (or the stations that would morph into alternative stations) said that back in the 80's? We would all still be stuck with bands like OMD and A Flock of Seagulls...you wouldn't have known Green Day, or Nirvana, or Coldplay, or Linkin Park, or Fall Out Boy or Incubus. Not saying that any of these are good or personal preferences of mine, but definitely flagships of many alternative stations today...and for a reason.

Either way the next few ratings book/battles should be interesting...

*stations trying to crack into the Mix's numbers
*KOMP attacking Xtreme on the Left and KVGS attacking on the right
*Xtreme is it going Free FM? If not why so much talk?
*watching many stations trying to "dethrone" Mark & Mercedes (saw that 500k a piece salary from another post, not sure if it's true...but if it is good for them. They've definitely proven to be worth that book after book.)

I do agree that I don't think KVGS will stand a chance with the signal they have.

Should be a fun year to watch 8)

Bad signals only do good when they offer something you can't get on any of the major signals. I would agree with those who say that the only chance AREA has of being any kind of a factor is for EXTREME to totally shift to FM talk and become a FREE FM.

Jay, that would probably be where the smart money would be. Of course, Free FM here in Philly ain't setting the world on fire, but that has never stopped CBS from blowing up stations for "less-than-tested" formats. O&A would only be a start. But, if they flip Free, don't expect Spike Radio to hang on.

Sadly, as much as I enjoyed them when I was out Jan-Feb 2005, odd man out in the rock race might be KKLZ.

Also, what would mainstream CHR be viable?

As far as the K-Vegas vs KLUC battle, one does have to go.

Anyone - how did K-Jewel do in the rankings? I know there's not too much you can post here, but that had to be MY FAVE station on my visit. It reminded me of old school Vegas and I still punch them up on the net.

If she was making that, why would she waste her time doing some cheezy real estate show on the boob tube? it might be $250k ..they have spent big money marketing them

Rockin' Rob, here are some of my takes on your comments.

Yes CBS does try out "less than tested" formats. An example is their new enviornmental AAA in Washington DC with earth day festivals, hug-a-tree contests etc. Somehow I don't see that coming to Vegas anytime soon.

Maybe the addition of Mike O'Brian in the morning will help save KKLZ from death. He had a good following when he was on the POINT.

Mainstream CHR is discussed here on a semi-regular basis. It's viable if a sales department can sell a young high cume/low TSL format. It would hurt MIX in non-M&M dayparts.

I strongly disagree that one has to go in the KLUC/KVEG battle. If their was only one rhythmic it would be a 18-34 monster, always in double digits. It would even be #1 25-54. There is plenty of room for both of them.

I am VERY impressed at how well K-JEWL does 12+. KJUL has the worst signal ever, it makes AREA 108 sound loud and clear in comparison. Yet KJUL beats full signal stations like the POINT, EXTREME, STAR, KKLZ and more. But as expected it's all 55+. A station like STAR with lower 12+ but quality female demos is better off. Still I am in awe how 104.7 can pull those numbers with that signal.

That would be fine with me. I listen to Don and Mike over the internet so I don't have to hear Spike's cheezy imaging... it would be nice to hear something fresh.
