What do the Jack naysayers have to say now? The format has been out over a year and its still doing well! So much for that "six month format" or "flash in the pan format" crap.

Regarding the Las Vegas market (sorry, going off topic), is KWNR one of the two country stations? If that is the case, then Coyote is now beating them!

All that negative noise came from:

* mediocre jocks who saw the jockless Jack phenomenon as another dagger in their lackluster radio careers (otherwise known as bitter and paranoid).

* radio people who bitch about "we hate cookie-cutter radio", then when something comes out that ISN'T cookie-cutter, they cry "but, all those songs on one station, all together, all those train wrecks--that isn't the way radio should be!". They just don't get it (and don't want to).

I say as long as you're pleasing your listeners, keep on truckin' baby.

I live in NYC... and I just don't understand it. Jack in Las Vegas is owned by CBS... and it's doing great. Jack in LA is owned by CBS.. and it's doing just fine. Jack in Seattle is owned by CBS... and it's doing fine as well...

...so what in the WORLD is wrong with the Jack FM here in NYC. Same station, same owners... same general imaging. They're all playing basically the same music with the non-jock approach (I've listened to Jack Seattle online, since Las Vegas and LA aren't online yet) and I cannot understand why Jack in NYC is floundering.

Is it all the bad publicity that came along with the format change? I DON'T UNDERSTAND!

All of the Jack naysayers are gonna immediately point to the Jack here in NYC... since it's the #1 market... and this Jack is totally sucking eggs.

I hope this new PD here in NYC does something... and I hope it doesn't involve flipping the format. As of date, not ONE Jack FM has left the airwaves... I would hate to see NYC's be the first.

Jack is not a format, it's a programming tool. Hence the country music stations that use this approach and use rural-sounding names. The NYC station that uses this programming approach will tweak aspects of it in order to build its audience.

CBS Radio has a big stake in JACK and wants it to succeed in NYC (and Chicago). A lot of the problems with NYC (IMHO - informed as it may be) had to do with the choice of station THEY chose to blow up for JACK.

I find the LA Jack to sound much more musically local. There are songs on KCBS that you'd only know if you spent time in LA - songs KROQ broke and brought to the local mainstream. Just today they played "Nowhere Girl" by B-Movie, "Dead Man's Party" by Oingo Boingo, "Walking in LA" by Missing Persons, and "And She Was" by Talking Heads.

There's a retro-alternative undertone to LA's Jack just *works* and is a perfect complement to sister KROQ.

Jack IS a format. It is classified in the radio industry as "Variety Hits" or "Adult Hits". I don't know why you think it isn't a format. Please get your facts straight.

I think you kind of answered your own question. One of the reasons why NYC Jack is floundering is because it replaced a legendary station. Once everyone recovers from the "death" of CBS FM, Jack might have a chance.

Another reason why is that this type of format may not work here. What works in Los Angeles, Seattle, and Vegas may not work in New York. It all depends on the market.

I also hope NYC Jack doesn't flip. Its a good station. The transition to jocks will hopefully start within this year.

Yep, no need for corporate types, PDs, MDs, oh, wait, it is a calculated format run by corporate programmers. Nice to see people living in denial.

Once again, it's nice in a smaller market. In the world for 25, 30, 35 million dollars of billing are needed, it's not there. Sorry. Don't let the bushweed hit you in the ass.

Just to clarify things... I'm a 19 year old West Indian guy. At first glance, you might not think that someone like me would like Jack FM... but I do. I really do.

I've known about Jack FM since my uncle in Toronto introduced it to me back in June '03 (not long after that Jack debuted) and I immediately loved it. The randomness of the music, the snarky comments of the Jack character. It was something new, something refreshing. After coming back to NY, I looked to see if Jack was in NY (I wasn't into radio at the time) but didn't find one. So I would stream Toronto's Jack most of the time. I kept listening even after they introduced DJs and enjoyed the music.

Then, it happened. June 3rd, 2005. Jack FM hits NYC. I personally was shocked to see it took WCBS-FM's place... but my wait was over. Jack FM was finally available to me over the radio. I have been listening to Jack daily since I found out about it (a few days after the debut, I believe June 8th) and haven't stopped since.

While I must admit, that this Jack FM is too classic rock-intensive (not a complaint as I love classic rock) but work needs to be done on the playlist. This Jack needs to be fine-tuned to NYC. NYC is a unique market with a lot of people being minorities.

If ANYTHING needs to be done musically, I'd say drop the classic rock a bit, pop on some more Hot AC tunes, throw some of WNEW's classic dance on there, mix it up evenly so nothing sounds like it's leaning any way... and take the fight to 106.7 Lite FM (WLTW). (On 106.7 Lite FM's wikipedia page it says that Lite FM is "a Jack FM with personalities and traffic reports")

Personality-wise... I say go for it. Initially, I was all for the no-jock approach, but seeing as that isn't helping matters, they should do it. BUT PLEASE, do it in a way that won't take away from the music. We don't need smart-ass DJs (we have Jack for that), we don't need a "Z Morning Zoo"-style morning show. We need personalities very similar to Canada's Jack FM stations (sans Toronto, who is now jock-free). Their DJs do a fine job of "manning the ship" without taking away from the Jack FM experience.

Forgive me for the length of this post, but I needed to get it off my chest I've been a part of other radio boards, but they are filled to the brim with anti-Jack folk. At least here, there are some pro-Jack people to make it better. I also have a feeling this post should be on the NYC board... but I'm not sure. Feel free to move this if you think so.

Give up on the small town format crap.

Its about the listeners. If they like it, its a good thing. ANd trust me, lots of listeners like this "small town format".

Los Angeles, Seattle, Las Vegas, Nashville, Indianapolis, etc. are not small town markets. This "small town format" is doing well in the big cities.

Oldiescat is right, your facts are wrong. Jack is a trademark
name. Variety Hits is a generic term for radio stations playing
a variety of hits. Bob, Louie, Sam, Dave, Jill and all the rest
are not formats specifically. Neither are the hundreds of Mix's,
Kiss's, Lite's, etc. Oldiescat --- congrats on your first
correct post in like 3,000. :>
