Hey Eveyone,
First off I want to say what an oppurtunity we are waisting by not utilizing this board. All of my fellow Promotions Directors could really use the board to get threw the long and pianful task of coming up fresh ideas on our own all the time, especially in the 1st quater when annuals are coming in, and every sales weasel in the building is looking for promotional ideas.

Anyway,
Launched a new station this week and am lucky enough to not only get a brand new van but... a budget for a digital wrap. My question is, since I have never had the oppurtunity to do this before, I need some help. My PD wants me to put artists on the van. Ok cool, but
a. do I need the artists permission, and
b. Where can i find high resolution pictures to use on the wrap.

I'd be kind of careful about putting artists on the van, unless you have a Classic Rock or Oldies format.. artists do change, and in a few years, you'll have an artist on your van that nobody really listens to anymore.

Most Maybe you could cover a side or sides of it with the station logo set at an angle, covering the whole side, that looks really nice.. with station name on the front doors... It's hard to explain what I'm talking about... but maybe you get the idea.

I agree w/ putting the pictures of artists on there - you never know how soon they will lose their popularity. Do you have a morning show yet?? THat seems to be a great place to plaster their faces and logo on the van.

These are definitley Artists That will be around for awhile, they are the core artists of the station, and since it wont be dwelling into the world of todays horrible music, It wont be much to worry about. My concern is since I am in a cluster of staions that don't play new stuff, the contacts with labels are next to none. They don't even really take our calls.

I've done this in multiple markets, and done right it can look so good that your listeners will pretty much line up to have their picture taken in front of your van, which means they'll put it up in their room and have your call letters in front of them daily (which is the real reason to do this).

Work with a record label and they may pay for the entire process. Also, that way you don't have to worry about the whole "permission" thang. Pick core artists to your station. Shoot for getting one group of artists on the driver side and another group of artist on the passenger side, if possible. Some of your listeners only see one side of your vehicle when you pass them on the road, so if you have different artists on each side, some of your listeners will swear you have two or more

Do some reseach on upcoming album releases for your format in 2006. If you time your wrap for that you'll certainly get label support because you'll be helping them market the artist and album (but don't get the album name on the wrap or it will look dated after a while).

Also, depending on what region of the country you live in, the wrap may not last long due to the effects of wind, rain, snow, rock salt etc. But if you're in Cali or the F-L-A you can get six months out of a wrap.<P ID="signature">______________

Wraps SUCK!!!!!!! they are expesive and DO NOT last! They bubble and peel and look like hell. Airbrushing is the way to go.

I agree with this...wraps...though they do look good when they are first done...look like (BLEEP) when they get a little faded or start to peel and such. We had wraps on for awhile(didn't have it in the budget to get them redone so soon) and we had trouble seeing out the back window of both cars because they got so dirty underneath the wrap and it started peeling...the sides were horriblly faded...we ended up having to take off the back window wraps of both cars...so we were driving around with just lenny kravitz's chest and nipple on our back cause we had to take off his head...they aren't good. and on our new wraps...they look nice..no artists...just bright colors with the logo big and slanted on both sides...except the guy that did the wrapping messed both of them up..so eventhough they look good from afar...we noticed tons of things wrong with them....but i feel as if Airbrushing might be quite expensive...i don't know though

Airbrushing is a great solution provided you're in it for the long term, since it can't be removed like a vinyl applique or wrap. But I'm still in favor of airbrushing, because it also resists fading a lot better. Every vinyl logo, no matter how well applied, ends up fading and is host to numerous other problems - scratching, for example, and god forbid you wash the vehicle with a pressure washer as is common at most car washes.

Perhaps something can be done in trade for the airbrush artist(s) to make the price a little more palatable? Ideas that come to mind are allowing them to promote themselves in the artwork (tastefully), and cross-promoting on the station's website (if there is one). There are a thousand ways to scratch each other's backs that do not fall within the realm of plugola/payola.
