Vennochi column

Joan Vennochi had a column in today's Globe, the premise of which was that the Red Sox are considering buying an interest in WBOS and switching the broadcast rights away from WEEI. Much of the column is a diatribe against the “angry white male” radio at WEEI. She also attempts to make the case that the WEEI personalities in general are critical of Sox management, and she says that if the deal goes through, the “boys at WEEI can still bark, but Lucchino can ignore them -- or bite back at will from his own friendly airwaves.”

I must say, I don't detect unfriendliness on the part of the WEEI hosts toward Sox management. If anything, it's the opposite. She specifically notes the heat the station gave the Sox over the Epstein debacle, but my memory is that most of the talk centered on Dan Shaugnessy's role in the mess.

What would appear to be closer to the truth is that this is another press release from the Red Sox, a press release disguised as an objective editorial. Even if it is not, how can anyone take it seriously, knowing that if Vennochi took a different tack, she would be biting the hand that feeds her?

Looks like Lucchino's Operation Smear has a new target.

Today's Globe also (in the Business section, I believe) had 2 letters weighing in on the possibility the Sox may move to FM. One was from a listener who had
some kind of hearing difficulty, and he or she was worried that moving the
Sox to FM would make it harder for them to hear (background noise problem,
"crowd noise"). The other was from someone from Gloucester who felt it was a good idea--good sound quality (and he noted they're already on FM with
WBOQ there)

Hmm!

The "house organ"...

If the Sox move it won't be because they are worrying (at all!) about what is being said at WEEI. They want a significant increase in a rights fee. If EEI pays, they can say anything they want (Joan!) and the Bosox won't care.
However, if it looks like EEI is telling them that they will get big ratings whether they hold the Sox rights or not, the team is making the correct move in looking at a BOS change, if the numbers crunch correctly.
The only way EEI gets hurt badly is if they lose the Sox and BOS programs significant challenges in morning/aft. drive which I think could be done but it would be expensive.

Could there be some sort of partnership in the works also involving 890/1400? They already have a decent PM drive show with a "name" personality.
