Verizon Albany NY Major Widespread Telecom Outage

Hi all,

I wanted to spread the news that Verizon is having a major widespread telecom outage in the Albany NY capital region. We're in Schenectady NY about 10 miles from downtown Albany, and all of our phone lines are down, including POTS, ISDN BRI & PRI, and T1 service. I have friends at various state offices, and they all texted me to say the world is ending, and one of them heard from an IT person that "the capnet phone switch room is taking on water". Not sure what that means, but it doesn't sound too healthy. =-)

Wow. What a nightmare. I fear going to things like T-1 for my only STL path for reasons just like you have described. The public really needs a way for us to broadcast to a local community without the phone company. Also, I am seeing a very disturbing trend of abandoning Marti systems and sometimes just their maintenance. When all the cellular and IT toys stop, we need that option to inform the public of what's going on.

They could go to a backup of having a computer, board, and mic at the transmitter site. Or record programming at the studio, burn it to CD, and drive it to the transmitter site. Repeat every 80 minutes. That's preferable to going off the air entirely.

Back up automation system at the transmitter site -- that has data pushed to it when changes or updates are made is the best solution -- including sending log data to the site daily so that a backup can be put on the air without much hassle.. I know one station near NYC that actually runs a back up audio vault system at their transmitter that's "always running" and they WAN via a small data connection to the site logs etc.. so a call to the switcher at the site can put it on air without much effort. (or in case if the ability to reach the site by phone was down) a drive could put it on with a push of a button upon arrival. (They also have an emergency studio at the transmitter site too).
