Verizon Cable in Rhode Island

I had Verizon installed last Wednesday and I do notice a difference. i notice a difference on my non-HD TV's. The picture is brighter an crisper. I was also told that Verizon has the capcity of 250 HD stations while Cox only has the capcity of 30 HD stations. This came from a Cox tecnician not Verizon. I also like the variety of stations and the addition of New England Cable News and WGN out of Chicago. The picture difference in my area is attributed to the cable strung pole to pole where in some areas has been there for more then 20 years. So to answer your question YES there is a difference.

What about the over-the-air TV stations and their separate availability in digital or HD? I have Comcast here in New Britain, CT and would LOVE to see some competition!

For Rhode Island, it says they carry WGBH (Boston), WLNE, WJAR, WPRI, WLWC, WSBE, WGBX (Boston) and WNAC for analog. Channel 2 and 44 Boston are also carried under "Local Plus". I'm guessing those other channels are subchannels of WGBH-DT? For broadcast HD they offer WGBH (Boston), WLNE, WJAR, WPRI, WSBE and WNAC. Nice to see them offer NFL Network in their basic lineup, something Comcast will probably never do. Lastly, 27 HD channels in total when counting broadcast? NICE!

P.S. I see that their drop-down menu also mentions MA, NY, NJ, PA and DE.

Why would they be carrying WGBH and WGBX from Boston? It's a little unfair, since WSBE isn't available on Verizon in the Boston area!

PBS on Verizon FiOS/RI

FCC rules require each cable headend to pick up at least 2 PBS stations. Rhode Island PBS and WGBH-2 fulfill that requirement in the Providence DMA.

PBS in the Boston DMA is WGBH-2, WGBX-44 and (for New Hampshire at least) NHPTV.

Does anyone think their should be rules where cable compaines have to have two of each broadcast network? Im not saying two CW or FOX or My. But two ABC's, NBC's, CBS's. If one local network has a local made program on or baseball the other network you can see the network feed. Such as in Connectict where we have one market. I think we should get two local stations from NYC and one from RI and maybe one from MA. Why not were in the middle of these states.

We should be able to get:
WCBS CBS 2 (for a second CBS to WFSB)
WJAR NBC 10 (for a second NBC to WVIT)
WABC ABC 7 (for a second ABC to WTNH)
WFXT FOX 25 (for a second FOX to WTIC)
and if they want give us another CW they can.

I completely agree. I've always thought that if a Grade A or B air signal can be received by viewers at home, then it should be made available through the cable systems. The stations have problems with this, though as it impacts retransmission consent and exclusivity.

Ken, a little thing called Syndex and sports are the two reasons why that will probably never happen. It would be nice though.

Well, I know that WGBH isn't actually IN the Providence DMA. I know that DirecTV carries WEDN-53 out of Norwich, CT. Is that considered to be in the same market? I also know that for awhile, they carried WEDN and NOT WSBE. But then something happened so they were able to carry it. Do they still get WEDN though?

Directv (rhode island) is still carrying WEDN.A little over a year ago whern they started carring WSBE I thought they were going to drop it.
I think and correct me if I'm wrong Directv and Dish pick up some locals off the air.Send them to a satelite. Then back to your reciever.I think they do this with some stations.
I know they were recieving WLWC off air for a while at one piont because the picture would get snowy and ghosting would appear badly.I think someone told that the site in RI where direct would pick up (off the air ) channels was in Westerly.
I think its all microwave now or the stations shhoot a signal out on thier own to Sat companies.
I could never figure out why they did nt offer WGBH.

Actually, I believe WGBH in the Boston DMA is still received over the air with DirecTV. When I had DirecTV a few years ago, it had ghosting on it, and I've heard that it still does. I believe WENH is still OTA, because I remember that one looked really bad. And I think WMUR used to be received OTA, but then in the Spring of 2005, I think they switched to a direct feed, but the closed-captioning wasn't working. And then eventually, it started working again.
