Verizon FIOS problems

My brother just switched fro Comcast to Fios. I guess they did some sort of upgrade that made both of his digital cable boxes to go nuts. They called Verizon and then neither cable box worked. I'm in the Cherry Hill, NJ Comcast headend and with all the years of having digital cable, this has never happened to me. If my box goes nuts, unplugging it and plugging it back in has always worked. The only thing that was working is Verizon's analog feed which is only broadcast channels.

I know someone in MD who has Fios, and had several box problems. He is still with them. The rate is lower, although Comcast has a lot of promotions which can be comparable. I find promotions to be fine (and a lot are probably going on now because of Fios), but one has to wait, after one's up before taking another. Comcast can take them away at any time, without it being considered a price hike.

Fios puts WGN on Ch.8 in the Philly market, right in between 3 6 and the other Philly channels. Fine they are carrying it, but it should probably be at another higher number not near the Philly channels IMO.

my understanding is that you can requestthey leave the loop in place should you ever revert back to the copper. But why would you? For landlines most use cell phones now.
I have had FiOS for internet for a year without issue and with TV just becoming available...I will be getting TV soon.

the worst thing is , is that if you go to fios , you are FORCED to lose your copper loop !!! :(

How would losing copper to fiber optic be a bad thing?

Please explain...

Because copper will work when the electric power goes down, fiber won't. Many will discover this when the first big ice storm hits---after a few days the cell phone battery will be discharged, as will whatever battery is in the box Verizon furnishes--then all hell will break out. The worst thing is that eventually Verizon and Comcast will have to charge for their services more than Comcast or Verizon did originally. Economically, it makes no sense to run two sets of communications lines down every street, You don't see anyone suggesting two power lines, two gas lines, or two water lines---it just makes no sense. Oh well...

One is not FORCED to relinquish copper. They merely clip or tie-off the copper connection where it enters your house, depending on the install tech. You are free to ask them not to do that step or even still - go back out after the install and reconnect the copper (if you're that attached to the idea of copper going to your home).

And really, if that's the WORST thing in your life - you're friggin lucky.

you are totally lucky to not have an "issue" .... i work for verizon ... i know .... nothing is more reliable than the copper loop , plus the low tech fidelity on a real telephone : nothing better - period .... the rules are that the loop must be taken away ... no request is supposed to be honored

losing genuine dependability - no emergency power back-up if peco goes down - i know

Let’s see. Copper, 768 Kb/s vs. dedicated fiber, 65 Mb/s. Seems like a no brainer. Unless you have an deep seeded unnerving attachment to a dial-up world.
hi sam - you only met me once - at september's in springfield - but your dad knew me better - my true condolences , and i mean it .
as far as a no-brainer goes , convenience and speed matters too much in our "i want everything now" world....besides , there is much more than dial-up on copper...plus copper is much more dependable

if the tech follows rules , he or she HAS TO TAKE IT DOWN . if the tech's supervisor finds out , that the simple clip off is done , he could get written up with possible suspension

i count my blessings , as far as lucky goes , but things needed to be pointed out ... i'm not a complainer

When the power goes out, you don't really have to spend hours on the phone. Who would you need to call to talk to for more than a few minutes anyway that couldn't wait until the power came back on? The battery backup only gets discharged if you're talking, and it keeps an emergency 15 minute supply in reserve if a real emergency happens. I guess if you're used to calling up a friend to talk to while you wait for the power to come back on, FiOS is not for you, but otherwise, it shouldn't be a significant issue.
