Verizon FiOS To Add RSN Surcharge

Subscribers in LA have the following: The addition of a new Dodgers network would bring the number of local sports channels in Los Angeles to six, the most in any major city in the United States. Besides Time Warner Cable's SportsNet and Deportes, and Fox's Prime Ticket and Fox Sports West, the Pac-12 Conference also has its own channel here. Fox Sports West carries Los Angeles Kings and Los Angeles Angels games.

The new Dodger channel is reportedly going to ask for $5/mo per sub. I wonder how much the surcharge for Fios customers here in SoCal is going to end up being.

People in NYC are going too pay a lot because you have

Read the article. It's a flat fee. NYC will pay the same $2.42 as everyone else. Besides, it's only for new customers and those on month-to-month plans, so I won't be paying it anyway.

And kudos to Verizon for creating a new $50 package without sports channels (though it also lacks other networks like Fox News).

They need to give the option to exclude sports from programming packages, the problem is that most programming providers force bundling. In other words, if you want to get FX you also HAVE to take Fox sports. If you want ABC Family you also have to take ESPN, and the list goes on and on.

Not until we pass legislation making this illegal will we ever have a true non-sports package. I NEVER watch sports, yet due to the rising cost of these sports packages, I'm likely paying close to $10 per month for that, between ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN News, FSN, NHL, NBA, MLB, NBCSN, CBSSN, etc.

And I know the argument is that we pay for a lot of channels we don't watch. I'm fine with this argument for other channels though, because these other channels are charging much smaller fees with much smaller increases (and aren't being held hostage by local sports teams for carriage rights).

Cable bills go up every year, but at some point they HAVE to reach a breaking point. Basic cable in my area is $70 per month. What is "too much" to pay for TV?
