Verizon launches FiOS Sports-less package

This was from last month, and I was somewhat surprised no one else mentioned it:

Very interesting concept. I could see other providers following. I'd get FiOS in a heartbeat if it was available here (though I'd be having sports channels). Both FiOS and U-Verse are adding subscribers at a rapid clip and crushing the traditional cable providers. They're also adding more subscribers than DISH or DirecTV.

Pretty good package if you aren't a sports fan. You can see the full line-up on the Verizon website. DISH has a package with no sports channels but the line-up is awful.

Cox has had a nice budget friendly pkg for awhile that I think is better for 34.99.

Locals with subs,all music choice,discovery,amc,e,nick,cartoon,disney,history,tv land,fox news,msnbc,cnn tru,comedy,twc,fx,usa,bet. no Mtv,vh1 or sports channels.
 
^ Now THAT is a good suggestion. I've thought about that before. A package with the local channels, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN News, ESPN U, NBA/MLB/NFL/NHL networks, the upcoming FOX Sports 1/FOX Sports 2, and regional choices seem like they might be a good offering. I know some people who don't care much about television other than sports. Then again, the cable companies probably realize a lot of people will pay $60-$100 a month just to watch sports. The only other option is a sports bar. For the moderate sports fan, going to sports bars to watch games can add up to a pretty decent sum, less convenient, and not to mention the DUI risk. ;)

Of course, you'd have to throw in TNT and TBS, I guess, since some MLB games are on TBS and NBA games on TNT.

I forgot about the Cox offering. Cox is one of the few decent regular cable companies (compared to Charter, Time Warner, Comcrap, etc). My area might finally be getting AT&T U-Verse soon, but I wish they offered a package that'd slot a little below their U200 package. So many premium channels I don't really care to have.

I would subscribe to THAT since it seems like every other cable channel is mired in "reality" mediocrity. TLC, Discovery, History, CMT all of 'em, not a dime's worth of difference in any of them.
 
ESPN and ESPN2 are still needed here for VERY occasional sports. But that's only when necessary.

I think that's the reason for this package. That's an extra $7 per month or so on the cable bill alone.

As for Fox News not being included, I heard somewhere Fox News' carriage fee is pretty high.

Also, I know Cablevision already offered a similar package.
 
Sounds tailor made for people like my grandmother. In her latter years her viewing habits included
Golden Girls, Three's Company, The Love Boat, Matlock, etc. No need whatsoever for people like
her to pay for ESPN.

Maybe it was contractually-bundled -- in order to get Fox News, you also must get your regional Fox Sports channel.

Don't think so, in Philly, Boston, DC, no FSNs. FNC is just one of the most expensive channels due to the ratings.

Obviously News Corp isn't going to make Comcast or other cable providers buy something that doesn't exist to get Fox News in those markets...

Ratings maybe, but not the most desirable demographics.
 
I'd just as soon take AJE and BBC over any of the "news" (read: commercials/propaganda/commercial propaganda) networks they have here!

Seems the only really reliable way to get hard domestic news these days is to import it. Sad that it had to come to that.
