Bruce James has owned those for a long time, putting WGMT Lyndon on the air around 1990, and grew his radio group from there. When WGMT moved from 98.3A to 97.7C3, it silenced the legendary Montreal 97.7 CHOM-FM signal that was listenable in many parts of the NEK, forever.

It is surprising how many Montreal FM stations that were once heard in Northern Vermont are now covered up by newer FM stations based in Vermont. But I guess as long as those Vermont stations don't cause interference north of the border, they're not breaking any rules.

The FCC and Canada (as well as Mexico) have very rigid requirements for stations including the non-US government giving approval of the proposed application. In other words the normal spacing required by the FCC is amplified by additional requirements within what is typically 200 kilometers from the border. Even the LPFM, normally 100 watts, must not exceed 50 watts as a part of those 'close to the border' rules.

The 50 watt limit is only true within 125 km of Mexico due to the provisions in the US-Mexico Agreement. This is not the case for stations close to the Canadian border. The US-Canada Agreement is much more forgiving. The restrictions for LPFMs near the border can be found in §73.807(g)(5).

Vermont's NEK and New Hampshire's North Country are very "over-radioed". It was almost 40 years ago that WMTK 106.3 Littleton signed on, and that was the area's first local commercial FM service, then 105.5 WNKV in St Jay.. Both featured two kinds of music: Country and Western. 😆 Before the local radio explosion, you could be on a high hill, and depending which direction, hear signals from Montreal, Boston, Portland.. WGMT's 97.7 is highly reduced to the NW in the direction of Montreal. Congrats to Bruce on the sale.

What about 103.7, WXLQ, later WZPK licensed to Berlin? They were around in the 70s at the very least. Not sure how well they could be heard in Littleton before they moved to Mt. Washington though.

You are correct about 103.7 when it transmitted from Berlin.. I was thinking in terms of the communities on the western side of Mt Washington and north of Franconia Notch: Littleton, Lancaster, St. Jay, Lyndonville, Newport, Wells River. Never heard the 103.7 signal, until it 'Peaked'..
