Verne Lundquist Done Calling SEC Games?

I’ve been a fan of “Uncle” Verne Lundquist my whole life.

It feels like you should be curled up next to the fireplace listening to the game on radio when his iconic, soothing voice fills the room. And with most of the big-time broadcasters I grew up listening to either deceased (Pat Summerall), retired (Keith Jackson, John Madden) or stuck in broadcasting purgatory (Brent Musburger), I still cling to the past while listening to Lundquist call games.

But with Lundquist’s contract expiring this year, it certainly feels like he’s in his final weeks of broadcasting SEC games for CBS.

Verne Lundquist Will Leave SEC on CBS in 2017, Brad Nessler to Replace Him

Veteran announcer Verne Lundquist’s upcoming 17th season as the play-by-play voice of the SEC on CBS will be his last. CBS announced Tuesday that after the 2016 season, Lundquist will be handing over the reins to Brad Nessler, who’s rejoining CBS now after a 24-year career at ESPN.

The rest of the SEC on CBS on-air team will remain the same in 2017, with Nessler joining analyst Gary Danielson and reporter Allie LaForce. Nessler will also call select SEC games this season in weeks where CBS has two games, and he’ll call the 2016 Sun Bowl and select college basketball games.

The 75-year-old Lundquist has been the lead voice of the SEC on CBS since 2000 and has spent 53 years in television. He’ll continue doing regular-season college basketball, the NCAA Tournament and golf for CBS in 2017.

It does make sense, Verne's not getting younger and he is probably in the process of trying to retire, he is retiring from calling SEC college football and sooner or later, he will retire from CBS Sports all together.
