Vernon and Roser head to 92.9/680 for 11-2 shift

Interview of Vernon going on now, I am betting that within one month, 730 goes dollar a holler. Sports 56 has to be weeping openly now, especially Gaston and Savoie.

New lineup has Vernon 11-2, Hasseltine 2-4, Parrish 4-6. Presumably, they can go back to normal time for Mike&Mike, then 2 hours of Cowherd.

Good call dude.
You predicted that move a few days ago.

I heard Verno say that 730 AM is going back to what they do best - dollar a hollar anyone?

He said that he left KQPN because his parents moved here recently and he needed something more secure - plus the signal is much better.
Good Line Up plus FM Signal = bad news for Q.

What I liked is that he said 730's owners weren't really in the sports radio business but they stuck with him, and that he expected that they will go back to their core business.  Which, as we know, is dollar a holler.

It just made the most sense for him to go to Entercom.  Again, I imagine 56 has to be quaking in their boots, because there is no reason to listen after 11 AM unless Ole Miss football is on the air.

Since 730 is not PPM encoded, we have no idea how much of an actual audience Verno had listening to his show.

But now that he's in the big leagues, we will find out if he's as influential as he seems to think.

730 actually already was dollar a holler, but Vernon flashed enough dollars in the faces of the station management that they let him holler. Now that he's gone, it will probably be back to crackpot preachers. :p ::) :-\

Gary Parrish's show is great and adding Vernon is a good move. 92.9 has a good afternoon lineup and what I like is they cover a gamut of sports there.

Well....I tried to listen to Verno today. Listened for 10 or 15 minutes and heard nothing but childish snickering and chatter from Verno and Roser about a stupid joke that Ron Olson and Jill Bucco had passed on to the new kids on the Entercom block. Not one word about sport....sorry Verno.....no different from the last time I tried to listen....same stupid laugh same lack of meaningful content.....wonder how many others tuned out?
Guess I'm back with Greg Gaston and Eli.

Yeah, who wants to listen to an entertaining radio show?

Big Difference between entertaining and informative show and giggling, inside jokes, how many free lunches can I get show.

Vernon did not set the standard in Memphis. Lapides did and continues to do so.
Vernon is a high school locker room type show and I think he will do well on his new station because there are listeners who like the high school locker room type of conversation and intellect.

that's funny! don't really care for either but if lapides set the standard we're in trouble. never heard such a name dropping, client stroking, self serving jackall in my life. i think the bigger question is will whbq's approach work or will they continue to be a distant #2? looks like thier strategy is to be the minor league sports station; from teams to talent, riverkings, rainman, stats etc. meanwhile it looks like 680 has taken a different approach but it must be expensive.

Big difference between a young, fun, energetic show and Grampa Lapides.
I wonder which audience the advertisers would prefer?

BOOM.

Vernon appeals to a younger demographic which is MUCH easier to sell, I would think. The only reason he bailed on 730 was that no one could hear that signal east of Perkins. He was making money there, but he had to do EVERYTHING. Now, he and Roser can just focus on the show.

Lapides was the pioneer, to be sure, but his day has passed. And I am in the demographic that would be Lapides' prime audience, age 53. I have gotten long since tired of him.

Is that what Vernon's show is? Young, fun & energetic. I like the last descriptor best...energetic. Listen a little more.

You mean more than the past 5 years?
In fairness, most radio shows fit those adjectives compared to Old Father Time.

WHBQ may be the Jr. Varsity of sports radio stations in Memphis (no ESPN affiliation, old/lesser talent, boring/repetitive content, covering lesser sporting events, etc), but at least they do have the advantage in ownership.

Flinn can always return to the half country / half heavy metal format when the ratings tank.

The subject has become old and boring with re-hash of the events.
Suffice it to say, I hope Vernon does well and WHBQ continues to thrive.
Thank God for satellite radio as I am not forced to listen to any of the local dribble.
Peace out.

So has Lapides, but that hasn't stopped you from singing his praises.

I thought Lapides was continuing to set the standard.
