Versions of Songs, that I'd rather hear

...the covers that i think are absolutely awful are the ones country artists in the 60's70's covered...for awhile a lot of top 40 hits got covered on the country charts by artists who could just not sing period..much less cover a rock tune..i'm sure country fans could care less as they love those artists no matter what they tried to sing...
I love what are now called "classic hits." I also love Conway Twitty's country songs. But I HATE his covers of "Three Times A Lady," "The Rose," "Slow Hand," "Heartache Tonight," and the rest.

Absolutely agree.

"Venus," definitely Shocking Blue over Bananarama
"Pinball Wizard," Elton John over the Who
"Lucy in the Sky," Elton John over the Beatles
"Spooky," ARS over Classics IV
"Stand By Me," John Lennon over anyone else
"The Power of Love," Laura Branigan over Celine Dion, even though I got to hear Celine sing it live a couple of years ago; I will obviously never get the chance to hear Branigan sing it live.
"Roll Over Beethoven," ELO over other cover versions
"Hushabye" Beach Boys over Mystics

One country cover that I actually liked was Johnny Duncan's cover of "Come a Little Bit Closer." His use of a female vocal (Janie Fricke) on the chorus was sheer genius! And he still managed to keep that "south of the border" flavor to it.

Power of Love--I'll take the Jennifer Rush version.

This might actually be from the early 1980's but I like Rod Stewart's version of "That's What Friends Are For" from the Night Shift soundtrack. Much better that Dionne's IMO.

Former "Paul Revere and the Radiers" member Freddy Weller did a nice cover of Promised land as nice as Chuck Berry and Elvis.

To me, the Rush version falls (stylistically) between the Branigan and Dion versions. I will give her props since she was a co-writer of the song, but her voice was a little too operatic for me.

Moving on...

"What I Like About You," I prefer the Michael Morales version over the Romantics' original. Probably because I actually got to hear the Morales version "back in the day." No radio station near me ever touched the Romantics' version.

"Handbags and Gladrags" was a minor or non-hit at least twice, including Rod Stewart's version, but the version by Chase is the best.

Didn't Bill Chase and most of his band die in a plane crash???

Yes that is true. In the late 80s I played Chase-Get It On on a gold based AC and actually got a call from Bill Chase's daughter. She never heard her dad on the radio before, she was very surprised.

As for cover versions. What I noticed is if the remake becomes a big hit (whether I like it, hate it or am indifferent) I often lose interest in the original. One example of many would be "Drift Away". I used to like it until the Uncle Kracker version came out..now I'm burned on the song alltogether.

Along the same lines as Chase, Chicago, and Lighthouse was .......Ides Of March - "Im Your Vehicle"

lighthouse.."pretty lady"...sweet..i get requests for that all the time

Funny you mention this song , I just e-mailed a copy of "Pretty Lady" to some collector friends of mine...Pretty Lady was the re-vamped Lighthouse band after several personnel changes for the Canadian group, a couple of years after their monster hit "One Fine Morning"....I have a 2cd set by lighthouse which has the album cut of "One Fine Morning " 5:39 vs the radio edit of 3:19

chicago really put the horns out front first with their music, ..several bands followed ..however very few had more than two hits..blood sweat and tears being the only other that comes to kind that had many hits...i always play the long versions..if the band took that much time and effort to record them..i think it should be heard..what i'm finding on youtube are a lot of live cersions that are really good and have a great mix..aas well as alternate takes..just found the doobie bros. video version of long train running..quite different in the radio version...

"Have I Told You Lately," definitely prefer Van Morrison's version of that one (although I haven't heard it lately) over Rod Stewart's rendition. But Stewart's recording is the one that became the hit.

I like Rod Stewart's original recordings from his rock era, I like the original versions of the songs Rod Stewart covered...but I don't care for Rod's cover versions of anything.

I like Michael McDonald's version of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"...it's an original take on the song with a lot of energy.

I generally don't like it when artists cover their own songs. For example I love Boz Scaggs-Lowdown but not his (recent?) remake, all the magic was taken out of that song.

Same thing when Eric Clapton covered Layla. Also, don't care for Todd Rundgren's later version of "Hello It's Me". The Nazz version was better IMO.

you beat me to the punch, Nazz vs Rundgren was my next post...but we do differ, I Like The Rundgren version more , the Nazz version was too slow..

I love everything that Rod Stewart did ,including his covers..including all the Songbooks..even thou they started to get watered down by the last couple..

How about "American Woman" Guess Who vs Kravitz...I am a sucker for quality re-makes, but don't get me wrong, I love the original equally.
