Versus' NHL Stanley Cup Hockey Playoff Question:

I was wondering if they usually use The Home Team's sports network coverage of The NHL, rather than their own crew or NBC Sports' Crew. Because right now I'm watching The Lightning-Pens Game, and apparently they're relying on Root Sports Pittsburgh-which is one of the former FOX Sports Channels that once served Pittsburgh, Seattle, Salt Lake, & Denver

The last Vancouver-Chicago game on Versus took the Comcast SportsNet Chicago telecast, but obviously that's a more complicated situation involving co-ownership and Canadian game rights from the CBC (though I recall seeing some TSN games last year!).

P.S. You may not have noticed, but last year, when the Fox Sports Net mainlines went to "FS City Name" format, the "FSN" logo was still in use on the now-Root Sports outlets.

P.P.S. Recently, on Root Sports Rocky Mountain (via MLB EI), they had audio problems and even briefly showed a "DirecTV Sports" test pattern. Yes, they're co-owned with DirecTV.

Cheaper under the current contract to use RSN feeds in the early rounds, especially with many games overlapping. Starting next year under the new contract, Versus and NBC have exclusivity from the second round onward.

I notice that Versus apparently is now able to regionalize its distribution, as ESPN has done for a number of years now.

All the games before that game had a Versus crew though in that series.

Versus is not alone, you know; MLB Network has to rely mostly on RSN's (FOX, Comcast, Root Sports. et.al) for most of its coverage on the their alotted live coverage windows. That's talking-on the cheap.

I notice that some of the games were coming from regional Comcast SportsNets, which NBC already owns.
Economies of scale.

NBA TV (being that it's the oldest of the league-owned sports networks) have been doing this for a number of years, and they usually carry a live game on a night when TNT or ESPN isn't televising one. Very rarely do they use their own announcing crew, but they almost always use their own graphics, as they interspersed those onto a clean video feed.

Think of it like this...you're essentially getting a free game any given night off of their seasonal pay-per-view packages.

I think I've watched NHL Network late-regular-season games and the coverage came directly from TSN in Canada.

GO BLACKHAWKS!!!!!!!!!! Upset those Canucks! "Here come the Hawks-the mighty Blackhawks..."

I can hear Jim Cornelison bring The Madhouse on Madison down after tonight's game 7.

Are they showing the game on a big-screen TV at the United Center? The game's in Vancouver.

It's a moot point now. Vancouver just won 2-1 in OT.

Sadly, the Versus coverage has been hit or miss on whether they show the National Anthem.

I've been watching that series via ESPN America (which takes the Versus feed) and they've shown the anthems (plural) every game that I remember.
