Very early rap music

In Puerto Rico, "bomba" and "plena" music is a kind of African and Antillean heritage singing that involves the singer improvising on a theme which is more "recited" than sung. In many cases, two singers "challenge" each other to sing something and then the other to respond with an answer.

#"Bomba is both a traditional dance and musical style of Puerto Rico.[1] Its origins are rooted in the island's history of African slavery but today has evolved into a community expression of Puerto Rican culture. "

"In Plena Singers recited the events of the day and often satirized local politicians or scandals. Sometimes plenas were filled with biting satire; at other times, they commented on major news events of the day, such as a devastating hurricane."

The plena very often has strong parallels with rap, carrying messages about events and society.

Those music forms are overa century old, and both have influences coming from the African heritage of a significant portion of the Puerto Rican people.

The Revolution Will Not Be Televised from 1971 was played on WDAO in Dayton Ohio.

"Hey Little Girl" was released in 1966 by The Syndicate of Sound - a SF Bay Area garage band. I took a friend's sister to her senior prom that year and they were the live band playing. Their whole set was pretty good as I remember but they never had another big hit (that I remember). I was surprised to see they're still playing concerts.

This is not a rap song as it has a full-fledged band and both medody and harmoney instead of just rhythm. Rap was unknown back then, fortunately.
