Re: reality check
Let's face it, a lot of top 40 rap and pop music just plain has stinking, reeking lyrics.
"My Humps" is offensive because it's plain dumb -- a real IQ killer.
I am an avid fan of rap and hip-hop while also conscious that some of what I voluntarily listen to has the intelligence of a night stand or ballpoint pen.
If this 10-year-old girl was not put up to this by her mother, then I think it's a great stand.
I get weary just thinking about people that are barely in the midst of puberty listening to songs about lust, sex, ridiculous amounts of cash and circular body parts.
There's a reason that Kiss targets the over 18 demographic--the Black Eyed Peas song mentioned was not intended to be listened to by girls in elementary to early middle school- it's merely a default.
Also, it's hard even in the grown up, adult world to program a station that pleases everyone.
Try going on a corporate road trip in a big SUV and play Pat Benetar's greatest hits.
Point being, if Yanni was being played on that bus, some kid would complain that it was causing them excessive fatigue before class.
We live in an age where most people say they like all kinds of music, but in reality, they really don't.
I agree--let kids bring walkmen and iPods on the buses. Besides, nobody programs radio stations better than we do ourselves.
We know what music we like and what songs we never want to endure.
There's no bottom line or compromise when you listen to an iPod--you pick all the songs and when you want to listen, instead of waiting for 200 people to call in a request so the DJ is compelled to play the song.
That's my two cents.
