VERY POOR COVERAGE OF TORNADIC STORMS OVER INDIANA FRIDAY EVENING ON WHAS

I'm not sure why, but the storm coverage on WHAS radio was very poor, falling upon non-meterologist Terry Meiners and Lachlan Mclean during the 6 and 7pm hours. Even the audio coverage from WAVE would have helped for those of us in Indiana. I relied on the internet sites weather.gov and the streamed coverage of WHAS 11, until that died due to limited bandwith. Fortunately the electricity stayed on during the storms. One of these days people, we won't be so lucky...

I agree. I tuned 84 in just to see how they were handling the situation. Lac was just talking sports as usual, although at least the attention tone was sounding. If it's not Jefferson County, WHAS dosen't care.

News Radio 84 (don't) Depend On It.

I listened until 7:10, and all he spoke about was who was going to replace Tiger Woods in the sports limelight.

Y'all are surprised about this? I mean this is a radio station that closes up the newsroom at 9pm now and all day Saturday and Sunday. I'm just amazed at the differences between WLW and WHAS. WLW continues to take community service seriously. HAS does it only when it's convenient for them.

What truly surprises me is that it's taking the listeners so long to figure this out...according to the ratings, they are getting away with this charade & have for several years! Do people really expect that little out of radio? If so, it's a sad day.

It appears they have been getting away with it for a long time. Just look at our FM band, Bob. What FM station has news on anymore? WFPL? FM stations in the larger markets have shunned news and information for years now at the urging of the consultants. And the listening public has let them. Now, with the onset of the internet and other avenues of information, who needs radio for that anymore? I have heard HAS repeat a newscast from one hour to the next. Don't know if it was an accident or on purpose but I heard the same newscast at the top of two consecutive hours a few months ago. So they are probably not even live anymore.

People make fun of the stations in the smaller town...like WSLM. But at least Don, and folks like him, are still serving the listeners and doing a better job at it than the bigger guys.

The no news during the weekends is not exclusive to smaller markets anymore. WLS in Chicago, once a powerhouse dumped all local news and traffic during the weekends in the fall of 2008. All they air now is canned ABC news updates and a taped "Weather Channel" forecast from a guy who is behind a mic in Atlanta.

We do have one all-news station (CBS owned WBBM-AM) in Chicago, and one local news/talk station that at least has local news and traffic twice an hour. That's it. The FM stations here too are lucky if they have any type of news or traffic during morning drive.

You must really hate Clear Channel. From listening to WHAS I have heard local news on Saturday's and Sunday's. Also, WAMZ has local news every morning with Chris and Mel.

By the way, I've also noticed 970 now does local news at the bottom of the hour up until midnight on weekdays. I guess they are trying to take advantage of WHAS not doing any local news past 8:30pm

When I was last in Louisville (2004), I found 'DJX had the best weather coverage. While it certainly wasn't wall-to-wall weather coverage, they came on and gave a brief run-down about every 2-3 songs. That was far better than what most top-40/CHR stations do.

I couldn't have said it better. It's damn sad when you have to listen to a station 110 miles away to hear live local news and weather. I get better storm warnings for Louisville on WLW than on WHAS. WHAS has just gone to automated. All you get is the EAS garbage that has country music playing in the background half the time and the idiots at the station don't even know they've been interrupted! That's the funniest part of all. I gave up on WHAS years ago and see no need to tune back in any time soon.

To 84's credit, they did remember to play the "tone" during the tornado warning's.

And back to the news on FM comment, I do believe WAKY still airs ABC news at the TOH.

But "the tone" plays automatically. That was his point. At WHAS the EAS equipment isn't even in the studio, it's back in the tech center. They have no idea when it goes off.

Which tone? Is this the C.A.T. or an EAS device that still uses the old EBS tone between the data burst (read: duck farts)?

They can't monitor the off air signal anymore because of the HD radio delay so when the EAS box takes over the program line, they can't hear it since they are monitoring the program buss out of the console.

I read on the tubes on the internets that those EAS boxes have a fancy technology developed in Battle Creek, Michigan called a cereal port. So why don't they take the corn flakes out of the cereal port and have it land in a bowl or perhaps a computer so the operator is aware of what is going on?

Good for 970! I will be tuning in to check it out. Is it an in-house news person? On a side note, I love the Casey Kasem AT40 playbacks on Saturday evenings.

Another reason to drop the HD. Who actually listens to AM radio in HD?

But they COULD take the audio output of the EAS box and feed it back to one of the extra monitor inputs of the console so that what they were monitoring was AFTER the EAS encoder. Then they would know when it goes off because THEY COULD HEAR IT.

And they could also run it through an old processor so it sounds normal to the jocks. Mine are that way. Maybe they have it that way too, but from listening to them it doesn't seem so.
