Very sad wlrs is gone!!!

In name only. They got new call letters for 105.1

I wonder if mainline will keep the calls and bring them back for some other station in louisville or even 105.1???

R.I.P. WLRS

Yes yes i know the station died years ago but now the call letters are no longer an active part of louisville ky terrestrial radio landscape

The new calls are WESI. There wasn't any use keeping the WLRS call letters if they're not being used except for TOH. I'm sad to see the WLRS call letters go but they may come back to town someday like WAKY did. WAKY was gone from Louisville radio for almost 20 years. So maybe "The Walrus" will be back someday.

I remember when WLRS (102.3) was still basically the lab station for The Louisville Radio School...
then after that running serious beautiful music. Jim Ameche (Don's brother) was on staff...big booming old-school
voice and delivery. IIRC...studios were in a very nice old house on 4th street...south of downtown near Magnolia
(before moving to The 800 Building). Other FMs included 99.7 still as WKLO-FM (mono simulcast of 1080)...
97.5 was still WHAS-FM doing classical...103.1 was still to debut as WSTM...also doing beautiful music...
and 106.9 was (or would be) WKRX...doing easy listening day...and more of what we'd call hot AC today at night.
WFPL and WFPK were on-air...as was 88.1 WNAS in New Albany...running 10 watts.

So what years was he in Louisville? There is no mention of him being here on his wikipedia page. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Ameche

I have only my own memory...but best guess is around 1967-1968. I was in high school...
my dad had recently purchased a Magnavox console stereo...and Jim made it rattle when he spoke!

The Henson family, owners back then, were definitily about radio and are still active today. There are many radio facilities in Kentucky built by the late Clarence Henson. He was active well into his later years. These days his son Ed owns a couple of stations in Western Kentucky.

Jim Ameche wasn't on staff at WLRS. He was voice tracked thanks to magnetic tape and the U.S. Mail. He was syndicated. I remember him doing some stuff on WBLG (AM 1300) in Lexington.

....And the thing I trusted most, was 102/LRS and the Holy Ghost.... But, they caught the last train for the.......WHERE????? Bye-Bye 'LRS guys and gals.... :'(

They're back. WLRS is now AM 1600 in Eminence, KY
Wow! New Albany Broadcasting changed 1600 from WLUE to WLRS. Who is it that owns NAB ? I like how they operate their stations. But this change means that WLRS can still end up somewhere on FM too right?

David Smith is a principal, if not the principal owner. We've been friends a long time, and as long as I've known him, he and his family have seen the value of established call letters.

WJYL- formerly 101.7 in Jeffersontown, became the call letters of their TV station in Jeffersonville.

WLSY- also formerly 101.7 in Jeffersontown, became the call letters of Cox Radio's Soul 94.7 under David's direction.

He acquired former Louisville call letters WLUE, and now WLRS for his stations. And that's just off the top of my head. I'm sure there's more.

I'm not sure what he gets out of it for 1600 in Eminence, but it might just be for a place keeper. I don't believe those call letters are available for assignment on an FM without his permission.

What's the point? Does he think people will just randomly write WLRS on a diary? And what is the format on 1600?

I remember hearing them in the evenings when they were "CAT-16"...
