Veteran Atlanta news anchor calls it quits

I just looked over the local websites and did not notice anyone missing from 2-5-11 so I do not have a clue what this is about. Since 46 does not have veterans I did not look there.

Maybe it's not an immediate departure. Let's play "Name that Veteran Anchor". Here's my list: Pam Martin, Richard Belcher (used to be an anchor full time at WAGA so I'm counting him), Jill Becker, Brenda Wood, and Amanda Davis. With all of the things going on at WXIA, it wouldn't be a surprise if Jill or Brenda walked out. I sure hope not as obviously I'm partial to that station. Monica was supposed to be retiring but extended her contract and it wouldn't be kept secret if she was at the end of her contract ready to retire.

Well, it nobody at 2-5-11, but who out is Bill Gaines at 46. Here the copy/paste report from newsblues....

That said, there are a few updates to report. We told you yesterday that Bill Gaines, primary news anchor at Meredith's WGCL-46-CBS in Atlanta (Market #8), had "retired" after 2½ years at the station. Not true, say station insiders, who claim Gaines abruptly quit on Wednesday, announcing his decision to the newsroom on his way out the door. His bio has been scratched from the website, and WGCL is searching for a replacement.

Good grief. They can't keep anyone at that station. I didn't see that one coming - especially since I wouldn't consider him to be an "Atlanta veteran" anchor.

Thanks for the info, tvnewsspecialist!

I guess that if a radio station can call itself NEW for 5+ years then an anchor can be considered a veteran if he puts in 2.5 years in this market. Considering John and Monica have been in the market for 30+ years and Brenda has almost 20 years then 2.5 years is now a veteran. Amanda Davis has been in the market since the mid 80s but 2.5 years makes one a veteran.

At the rate things are going, a "veteran" is anyone who lasts more than a month in this market.

I disagree. Only WGCL has a high turnover rate. WSB-TV, WAGA, and WXIA/WATL have very low turnover rates. Keep in mind Bill Gaines was called a veteran because he was in TV news for a while...in other markets before coming to Atlanta.

Many TV news people have quit. Rich Noonan is another former WGCL anchor who quit the business. Add to that Art Franklin, Flip Spiceland (now PR guy), and also Steve Adamson. Long work weeks put together with bitchy and/or incompetent management (oftentimes looking out for profits) are not a good combination for good health.

Bill Gaines is another TV news person that got caught up in the system...and made a wise choice to get out.
