(R&R)7:49PM Smith spent 30 years in Los Angeles radio, beginning his career at KDAY-AM and last working in 2001 as a member of the KCBS-FM (Arrow 93.1)/L.A. on-air team. In between he worked at KRLA, KROQ, KMET, KLOS, KWST, KMGG, KUTE, KTWV (The Wave) and simulcast partners KACD & KBCD. His age and the cause of death were not immediately known.

Damn.

China and I were well acquainted; I just talked to him a couple of months ago.

The real shame is that no one in the market would hire him since he left Arrow.<P ID="signature">______________

Truly sad to hear. One of LA's great under rated air talent.
Fantastic pipes and delivery... Met him once at an event and he
approached me. Very gracious move, and he had no reason to be
so nice to a stranger, but there he was.
He will be missed...

Thanks.

I did not have any airchecks of his. Wish I had more.

Great voice and one-to-one communicator.

Re: 1973 photo of China Smith

China was part of the San Diegoazation of
LA radio. China Smith, Jimmy Rabbitt, and
Lee Babi Simms all came to LA directly from
KCBQ San Diego. China was one of the best,
smoothest, slickest cats, without ever
sounding phony. Great pipes. The art
of one on one communication is just
about gone. RIP China.
