Veteran Sportscaster Paul Eels Dies

from KTHV, Little Rock

Collision Takes The Life Of Sports Anchor Paul Eels

Paul Eells, the long-time sports anchor at KATV in Little Rock was killed shortly after 8:00 p.m. Monday night while driving back from a Razorback golf tournament. He was 71.

Arkansas State Police report Eells' car crossed the median and struck another vehicle head-on in the westbound lane of I-40 in Russellville.

Eells and the woman in the other vehicle, Billie Burton, 40, of Dover were pronounced dead at the scene.

An Iowa native, Paul Eells was born in 1935. He was a graduate of the University of Iowa and began his career at KOKX Radio in Keokuk, Iowa. He went from Iowa to then WSM-TV in Nashville as sports director and became the Voice of the Vanderilt Commodores. He came to KATV in 1978 as the Voice of Razorbacks and won numerous awards for his work, including being named Arkansas "Sportscaster of the Year" eleven times.

Eells was also the radio voice for the Arkansas Razorbacks on the Arkansas Radio Sports Network.

Eells leaves behind his wife Vickie, two daughters and a son.

That news is really, really sad. I did voice-overs for KATV back in the late '80s, and got a chance to be around Paul a bit. Not only was he a hell of a nice guy, but he had a great sense of humor.

He'll be missed.

Mr. Eells was one of the nicest people that I met at Channel 7. Like they said in the news item, he went out doing what he loved.

Not to be morbid or disrespectful, but as a strange coincidence - Bud Campbell, Mr. Eells predecessor died in an auto accident as well, only in west Little Rock @ Rodney Parham & Reservoir Road. At that time, there was nothing but a large hill of dirt where the Exxon station now sits. If I recall correctly, he was headed home from the station late one night, and for some reason hit that corner and rolled his vehicle. He was another great guy as well.

Paul will be greatly missed by the people he knew and by his fans.

I knew Paul back in the day and loved him to death. I don't remember him ever saying anything bad about anyone. We lost a heck of a man in that accident. He was a true gentleman.

Just sad all around not only Paul but someones wife, mom, sister, friend gone as well. I feel sorry for everyone in Arkansas and especially the person who has to replace Paul's place calling Hog football.

Paul Eells was the Dean of Arkansas Sports.

I enjoyed working along side of him on occasion. Like in an earlier post, Mr. Eells was a "true gentleman" and will be dearly missed.

I hope that someone that is as good as Paul gets to take his place. It would be a shame to see the Hogs PBP falter.

Maybe, he could enjoy the same privilege as Paul had in working in LR and doing the Razorbacks.
