"ENTERCOM is also purchasing RADIO ONE Urban AC WILD-F/BOSTON and will flip it effective 5:30p ET TUESDAY (after a stunt) to simulcast new sister Rock WAAF to provide that station with a better signal in much of the BOSTON market.

"ENTERCOM Pres./CEO DAVID FIELD said "we are very pleased to announce this expansion of our station portfolio."

Where does this leave R&B/"Urban AC" listeners? Will WILD (AM) dump the black talk and gospel format to go back to R&B? Will another station pick up the slack?
 
I wonder how 'BCN will counter. They've been poking fun at "AAF's signal in promos lately, guess it's time to re-think that.

My travels last month brought me to the foot of the channel 27 tower in West Boylston, partly to confirm that WAAF had PERMANENTLY moved its transmitter there. It's a DA that seems to SUPPRESS its output northeast, east and southeast! If the transmitter on Asnebumskit Hill is still operational, it seems that Entercom would be better off with the status quo ante.

How was WILD-FM billing in relation to its ratings? If the ad agencies don't think the older R&B listener is worth selling to, why would anyone in Boston pick up the format? Hartford has no R&B/Urban AC either, and it has a proportionally larger black population than Boston.
 
I love Alfred Liggins comments "While Boston is a wonderful radio market, it is not of great strategic importance to us." I don't mind them being capitalists, I'm not knocking your hustle, but any company but Entercome on' Ken Nash must be doing flips in his grave. Whether its D&C's snafoo or their general minority hiring practices, i.e. none they don't have a great track record. But a $20 million profit outweighs committment to "THE COMMUNITY" 25 YEARS SERVING THE COMMUNITY MY ASS!

Radio One Agrees to Sell WILD-FM In Boston
WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 21, 2006--Radio One, Inc. ("Radio One" or the "Company") (NASDAQ:ROIAK and ROIA) announced today that it has agreed to sell the assets of radio station WILD-FM, located in the Boston, Massachusetts metropolitan area, for approximately $30.0 million in cash, to Entercom Communications Corporation. Radio One expects to complete the disposition during the second half of 2006.

The Company acquired WILD-FM in October, 1999 for approximately $10.0 million and expects to utilize its existing NOLs to shelter most, if not all, taxes associated with the capital gain that will be generated by the sale. For the most recent trailing 12-month period, WILD-FM had approximately $2.3 million of net revenue and operated at an approximately break-even level, after taking into account direct expenses and allocated expenses incurred in the Boston market for the Company's two radio stations.

Commenting on this transaction, Radio One President and Chief Executive Officer Alfred C. Liggins, III stated, "This sale represents a very good start to our asset disposition process. While Boston is a wonderful radio market, it is not of great strategic importance to us. We will use the capital generated from this sale to reduce our leverage while we continue to look to rationalize our asset base."

I knew it would be only minutes before the debate would switch to the possibility of the Red Sox airing on 97.7.
Never mind that the African American community is losing their heritage outlet.

Wrong! Hartford has Urban AC on WKND 1230AM. It recently moved to that signal and had been picking up listeners now that it has a better signal. Plus WYBC-FM reaches Hartford. Look at New Haven's ratings: WYBC is always in the top 3. And that is a city with a lower percentage of blacks than Boston.

by the way the stunting has started: computerized voice counting down to the flip on Tue at 5:30 pm.
Occasional bits are thrown in by the computerized voice, like song lyrics or movie quotes, or: "I've got the hots for the ATM Machine around the corner. I'd like to make a deposit." ...and "She honored his offer. He offered his honor. And all night, he was honor and offer." (I know, groan...)

Boston Radio Watch says the black talk format exited WILD (AM) 1090, incl. Jimmy Myers...gospel for now.
Sale on the way?

I'm not a big fan of rap/hip-hop, but does Boston really need another signal with skull crushing hard rock either? Rock was where it was at 30 years ago if you wanted to reach an 18-24 male audience, but not anymore...a significant percentage of that audience likes rap today. It's not like Boston lacks for rock stations.

Since when is WILD-FM a "heritage" outlet? Didn't that station used to be country until the mid-90s?
