VIACOM RATINGS DOWN 27% FIRST WEEK WITHOUT DIRECTV

Won't take too many calls from advertisers demanding a 27% reduction in rates to get them to
raise the white flag.

I'm sorry to doubt those numbers, but DirecTV only has a total of 16 million subscribers vs over 100 million cable subscribers. If every one of them stopped watching Viacom channels, it wouldn't amount to a 27% drop. More like half that amount.

One thing is that their most popular channels, like Comedy Central and MTV were in reruns during the survey period. No original programming usually means fewer viewers.

If they are down that much I'd guess that similar channels like HUB were probably up 20%
last week.

Which side do you take in this? I'm on the DIRECTV side. Why pay all that money for channels
that are mostly not worth watching?

If that was really what this is about, there are about 40 other channels I'd want them to drop too. But that's not what this is about. DirecTV is no different from cable in that they want to sell you bundles. They aren't going to give you real freedom of choice. So you will always pay for channels you don't watch. That's how they make money.

That IS what this is about. Directv doesn't want to pay Viacom more money for their
channels. The choice thing you talk about is another subject.

Actually, DirecTV has no problem paying more money for their channels, and they've said so. They've already paid more money for Fox, NBC Universal, Disney, and Discovery.

So I guess they just don't want to pay Viacom because they don't like them?????
