ViacomCBS Gets New Name


Here is an op ed on CBS News brand name and how that will play out under the Bakish/Redstone leadership with Paramount Inc.


Although he lived for 10 more years, that was the end of the Paley era. CBS then went through a series of owners, each of whom lessened the luster of the once-great Tiffany Network.

Fast forward to 2022. Viacom, a company founded in 1972 by, you guessed it, William S. Paley, has announced a name change from ViacomCBS to Paramount. If you have not read the official press release, it is fascinating. The four-page document details every program and franchise the company owns, even Beavis and Butt-Head, but with one notable exception. Other than one line of fine print at the bottom, there is no mention of CBS. CBS News is not mentioned at all. In fact, the only reference to “news” in the entire release, which makes clear that Paramount will be a global entertainment company, comes as one word in a long string of product offerings on the Paramount streaming service. Even then, there is no CBS.

Interesting observations, but keep in mind that the people running the company come from the Viacom side, not CBS.

Plus all of the properties they've been selling these last two years were owned by CBS.

Yeah, I'd think it is mostly just TV geeks that would be familiar with the Viacom name. For those of us that are TV geeks, Viacom buying CBS back in 1999 was odd to see, considering that Viacom started out as a subsidiary of CBS that CBS was forced to spin off when the FCC disallowed the big three TV networks of the time from owning syndication companies.
