Part of All Access

ViacomCBS provided some details on its plans to expand CBS All Access into a broader streaming service with content from Nickelodeon, Paramount and more.

During today’s fourth-quarter earnings call, ViacomCBS Bob Bakish said the new service will be built on top of All Access’ existing technology platform and content lineup and will be available to the service’s existing subscriber base. He said the service will add content from Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, BET, MTV and Smithsonian along with films from the Paramount library. He said it will amount to an additional 30,000 episodes of TV and up to 1,000 movies.

That new content will combine with All Access’ existing content including more than 200 live linear CBS stations and on-demand content including All Access originals.

“Importantly, know that we have designed this offering to be compatible with the evolving distribution landscape. We see it as a value creating opportunity to further broaden of partnerships with traditional distributors akin to our recent Comcast relationship expansion for CBS All Access. And, we also see it as a robust offering for distributors in the broader OTT space including mobile,” Bakish said.

Now CBS announced that Dana McClintock on June 30th

After 27 years in CBS Communications, I’ve had a hand in writing a variety of goodbye memos, and now it’s time for a version of my own. It’s time because the integration of the ViacomCBS Communications Department is well on its way, and I feel confident that we have people in place, from both Companies, to set us up for success going forward. I will continue to assist in this regard right on through my last day which will be June 30.

While some sentimentality is inevitable in times like these, I am pleased to say I feel entirely content that my CBS story is complete. From Letterman press rep to chief communications officer, I have been fortunate to participate in a media evolution that featured immense change, unimaginable challenges and rewarding success.

Along the way I have served some of the biggest and best brands in the business. And as much of a pleasure as that has been, it doesn’t come close to the gratitude I have for the colleagues and reporters that have made me feel welcome, supported me and inspired me, ever since my first day as a 21-year-old at Black Rock. In the end it’s always about the relationships and connections that make any job tenure great, and I’ve had more than my share.

So while I may not be saying goodbye just yet, I am saying thank you, for sharing this ride with me, and for all you’ll do to grow this Company into the future. I look forward to connecting with you again before I depart, and staying in touch beyond that as well…

Kelli Raftery leaves CBS

Kelli Raftery, a veteran CBS communications executive who has worked in many different roles over more than two decades at the company, is poised to leave, one of several executives departing in the wake of the company’s recent merger with Viacom.

“It was important to me to be here for the early innings of the merger, but I realized over the past few months that this is the right time for me to start writing my next chapter. I will say my final CBS goodbye on a day that feels perfectly fitting for me… in the crowd at the NCAA Men’s National Basketball Championship on Monday, April 6, with many of my co-workers, friends and family in attendance and my dad on the game call,” Raftery said in a memo to staffers Wednesday. “There’s really no other way I would want it! “

Raftery is the daughter of Bill Raftery, a longtime college basketball analyst for CBS Sports and former head basketball coach at Seton Hall University.

Dana McClintock, CBS’ chief communications officer, on Monday announced he would exit in June.

Now there is talks that CBS will divest Simon and Schuster

ViacomCBS will look to offload its Simon & Schuster publishing unit, Bob Bakish said Wednesday during an investor conference.

“We’ll engage in a process and look at strategic alternatives for Simon & Schuster,” the ViacomCBS CEO said during the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference in San Francisco. He added that the publishing unit “is not a core asset. It is not video-based. It does not have significant connection for our broader business.”

I've been wondering why the publisher has been retained for so long. It was acquired by the Gulf+Western conglomerate, which also owned Paramount and G=W renamed itself Paramount Communications. Viacom acquired it when it bought Paramount in 1994.

It's not likely to fetch a premium price considering the challenges that print publishing face.

Viacom has investments in Ananey

The studio international networks division, led by CEO David Lynn, nabbed the majority stake in the Israeli media player it didn't already own.
ViacomCBS Networks International, a unit of the Hollywood studio, on Monday said it has acquired 100 percent control of Ananey Communications Group, an Israeli pay TV channel provider and content producer.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but ViacomCBS acquired a controlling stake in Ananey after, in December 2017, first picking up a minority stake. Besides producing content for its own and VCNI’s channels in Israel, Ananey also produces the hit teen drama Greenhouse Academy for Netflix.

Ananey has also long licensed or represented Viacom’s global brands for Israel, including Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon and Nick Jr., including after the merger with CBS to create ViacomCBS.
