I think someone might have gotten RDS and HD Radio confused, or said HD Radio as a joke. HD Radio equipment is likely out of the price range for any pirate, especially with the yearly fees they demand.

They are in fact running RDS though.

Do you really think that a pirate, who is not paying for a license or any other legal fees, is actually going to pay an annual HD fee if they manage to get ahold of the equipment and start broadcasting in that mode?

Why would they comply with HD fees if they're not even complying with a broadcast license? That doesn't make sense.

I think they'd have a hard time getting their hands on a transmitter, without paying the fees. Unless just anyone can just call up and order an HD transmitter? RDS can be generated by software, so that's easy.

Why can I never hear these pirates of which you speak? Do they broadcast sporadically, or can their signals not be heard in Brighton?

Everything becomes available in "black market" versions eventually, if not sooner.

Some of them can definitely be heard in Brighton, though not very strong since most of them are based in the Boston inner city (Mattapan, Dorchester, etc...) and aren't all that powerful. Depends on where you are in Brighton. If you're north of Corey Hill/Summit Ave, they may be somewhat blocked by the terrain. And, some of them are on the air more sporadically than others.

Some frequencies to check if you're looking for possible pirates around here: 88.5, 89.3 (maybe), 91.3, 96.5, 98.9, 99.7, 101.3, 102.1, 102.9, 105.3, 106.1, possibly others on FM.

Most of the AM pirates are on the "expanded" band 1620 to 1710 (except 1650 which is Logan Airport TIC). AM pirates have also been on 720, 870, 990 and 1580 in recent years.

And that they are! Less than $400 gets you an Inovonics Basic RDS encoder. Another $1000 and you can list song titles. All of the FM stations I engineer have RDS in one way or another. Even the 10 watter I engineer will be running basic RDS shortly. Vibe or Choice could easily get their hands on one of these babies, at anytime. On the other hand, if Vibe or Choice tries to run IBOC, they'd have a hell of a time getting the licensing from Ibiquity. The cost of the exciter/amplifier alone plus basic accessories will cost you about $70,000, NOT including the licensing from Ibiquity $25,000 for one stream. And I'm positive that Ibiquity will not sell to a station that is not FCC licensed. There is too much liability involved in associating with a pirate radio station.

A very simple and easy way to install RDS is using this software called Airomate http://www.diffusionsoftware.com/airomate.php

All it requires is a sound card that supports 192kHz. I actually tried it myself with my little Ramsey FM TX kit, it worked fine! I think the trial version would run for a half hour or so. The full version costs 29 euros, not sure how much that is american. This is probably what the pirates are using.

I should've explained a little better what I was talking about when I said it was easy.

(Besides the law), what's to stop illicit manufacturers from duplicating the Ibiquity circuitry and selling functional imitation IBOC equipment to pirates on the black market or privately?

Last time I was in Portugal, the Euro was around a buck and a quarter. With the dollar weak, it's probably closer to a buck forty around now. Although they'll probably try to screw you on the exchange rate and shipping, 29 Euro ain't a whole lot.

Don't know much about HD manufacturing, but look at medicine, made & sold cheaper in other countries.
When the price is right they could probably buy this legally in Haiti or elsewhere and then import it here. Then the FCC will have more issues.
Will sound quality be the same?

Folks:

I was just in Newton and heard pirates on 88.5 and 101.3.

Can anyone tell me their estimated locations?

If you were hearing Middle Eastern music on 88.5, people have been saying that one is in or around the Dedham area. 101.3 was probably "Big City FM", the most powerful of the Boston inner city pirates.

I heard that in Norwood Tuesday night as well. Jammed my Sirius reception to the point where I had to change the frequency while driving.

101.3 fm Big City is so strong I would have thought the FCC would have caught up to them by now.Brockton is also picking up the pirates, half -dozen on the air at night.

The 101.3 situation has been assigned an FCC case number that is suppossed
to be resolved within 30 days... It has been over 30 days since our Washington
attorneys filed an official complaint with the FCC and asked for an immediate cease and desist. They are still on the air...talk about bold as brass. Something tells me that these days the FCC is another waste of our tax dollars as they will be about as effective as immigration control.

I hate to say it but if some white kid in Wilmington pulled this crap he would
be in jail and the property seized.

The Race Card . Do you know the race of Big City 101.3 Owners ? Just because 101.3 plays Rap,Dancehall Music ,does not mean 101.3 Owners are not White ( Aka Jamn 94.5 Owners ) .I am just asking because I dont know the race of 101.3 owners ( and I dont care ). But I do know that Boston Herald has Adds about 106.1 Touch FM ( White Owned Newspaper gettin' money from a Pirate Station ).

I was wondering who would be the first to play the race card and I got my answer. It does not surprise me, I'm afraid you have no idea who you are talking to and what my broadcast background includes, I'm sorry
but you are barking up the wrong tree on this one, It just so happens that a few of these pirates have come to me asking for advice or help to get them on the air.
At least a third of my 35 plus year broadcast carreer has involved Urban and Spanish formatted radio in Boston and Florida.
Instead of being a wanna be, learn the business and get a real radio job, then you will not have to waste time talking about things that are unrealistic from a business standpoint.
