Vic "The Brick"

sportsGM said:
is vic the brick jacops on TV too?

He used to be a weeknight sports anchor on KCOP here in Los Angeles, back in the late 80s/early 90s. Before that, he worked in Fresno at KMPH-TV, that area's Fox affiliate, and before that at KXAN-TV, NBC in Austin, Texas. He hasn't had a regular TV gig since the KCOP days.

how is it that vic in his updates can report on maybe 2 or 3 stories in the minute or so the updates has become now on sports days where stuff is happening, but other reporters like deb carson can get in 5 or 6 on off sports days?

this brickhead needs to hit the streets with the other brickhead fsr employs.

It is quite possibly the worst update in the history of SportsRadio. Hey I get what FSR is "trying" to do... its all about entertainment, right? But two things NEED to happen for an update to make an impact or even be entertaining.

1) It has to make sense
2) It has to be in English

Isn't Fox Sports Radio a national network? A NATIONAL NETWORK. I don't need some dude "feeling me" and needing the next 10 minutes after the update to figure out WTF he was just talking about.

His story count sucks... his stories suck... and his delivery is atrocious. The local affiliate here has started sweeping the top of the hour. Can't blame them.

I happen to like Vic the Brick from the XTRA Sports 690/1150 days when I lived in southern California. I'm not saying he's the best update person in the world (far from it), but I do get his style. He is definitely homeristic, though. When the allegations against Kobe Bryant in Colorado really blew up, Vic was unabashedly behind him. It's one thing to homer for the local team and players; it's another to act like their water carrier.

Hey Golden Boy I get that... and if thats the case, then put him on LA Radio

Nationally though... no way, no how, not sane.

Its almost as bad as putting Stephen A. Smith on in the mornings... ohhhh wait.

I've noticed recently that not only is he doing the national sports updates, but he's also doing local updates on Xtra sports 860 (SF Bay area) during the afternoon show in place of the national update. "Bay area sports fans...Feelin' YOU".

Yea, he's different. I don't hate him, but he definitely took some getting used to.

My thing about the Vic the Brick, in all of my years listening to him, is though he seems to a likeable person, he has no business being a update guy/reporter on what's suppose to be a legitimate sports broadcasting operation. He's an acquired taste to many, his shtick gets old real quick. I really lost respect for him in Kobe's rape case, especially when he constantly referred to Kobe's accuser as "sexual predator".

I mentioned this before...I was glad that Chris Myers and several callers took Vic the Brick to task for his updates a few months back. Just give us the updates, leave out the shtick, and get hell off the mic, please.

FSR should let Steve DeSager (sp?) do all the updates, thats how you suppose to do it.

I really hate the "LA" feel FSR has, the LA/USC homerism by the likes of Vic the Brick, kills me. Not "feelin' you" dude.

Without a doubt, the undisputed worst excuse for "talent" in the history of LA Radio. The guy is a clown who actually believes his shtick. Just be glad you don't have to see what he wears to games in his guise as a "broadcast professional." The teams that credential this idiot should have their heads examined - except as has been mentioned here numerous times - he's like an extension of their p.r. depts. His act is strictly small time and the fact that the clueless like Don Martin continue to allow him access to a microphone in the #2 market (much less nationally) is another shining example of the blind leading the blind. Both of them should be in a market that suits their abilities...like Wichita (my apologies to any offended Kansans.)

I agree with your point on Steve Desager. He really sounds like he was born to read sports news. I don't think he's nearly as good when he pops on with Bruce Jacobs but for updates only, he's one of the best.

Just an average listener here but I too enjoy the work of Steve Desager. He does a fine job. Some others make me "turn the dial".

I really appreciate his professionalism. We shall see how FSR does in the next few months, this SAS for Czabe is not looking good from what you hear from some.

Desager & Deb Carson are really good update people and actually sound like journalists who care about giving you the sports news. Vick the Brick & Looney sound like cartoon characters who try to make themselves the focus of the report rather than the few sports stories and scores they actually give.

Also agree that Desager should stick to the updates and stop interrupting Bruce Jacobs.

Yeah, back in the 80s, Vic Jacobs was so annoying on Austin's KXAN that I wouldn't watch any NBC programming for fear I might see one of his promos! He's only gotten worse, but it's proof that Gypsy Rose Lee was right.

As far as the updates please, please. Could someone tell Vic I am not feelin' him. Looney probably thinks those puns on the updates are funny. Just stop it! "Braves kick some Assstros." "Tigers Mary-Kate and Ashley the Twins.", Come on guys. Stop. Just give me the news and scores like DeSager (sp?).

Yes, they're both terrible! But you don't have to do actual research when you use all of that filler crap like Vic's schtick and Looney's gay 80's puns. When you "let the sound tell the story" you only have to fill so much non-highlight time. But you can tell that Steve Desager and Deb Carson (and others I can't think of) actually put time into telling the stories, make note of important stats that happened during games, etc.
