The singer had been in critical condition recently after being hospitalized due to a fall at his Guadalajara ranch in August, and being diagnosed with Guillain–Barré syndrome afterwards.

I can't think of an artist with such widespread appeal anywhere compared to what Vicente had in Mexico and among Mexicans living in the USA. Not Sinatra in the US, not a Beatle in the UK. Even folks who did not normally listen to ranchera music found in him the voice of a nation set to song.
