This could have been back when the FCC did allow cable systems to carry certain distant stations after 1:00 am. It would be interesting to know what cable systems did, indeed, carry distant network affiliates (and perhaps non-network stations) in the late-night hours. I believe WCBS in New York was carried this way in the northeastern US, presumably by microwave beyond a certain distance from NYC.
