Victoria's CHEK T.V. back to CBC

Interesting twist in the life of CHEK TV in Victoria. British Columbians will know that CHEK was saved by an employee buyout. Now the heritage Vancouver Island station has entered an interested partnership with CBC. The newly independent CHEK is now in a content sharing agreement with the CBC for news. It only makes sense..after CHEK cut ties with Global Television in Vancouver. It is interesting..given that CHEK was a CBC affiliate when it signed on in 1956. A sign of the times..in order to survive..and good for CHEK...I personally worked in sports at CHEK not long ago..and it is a great story.

I think its a great idea since it will be hard to send reporters from the lower mainland to the island and vice-versa. You know the ferry takes a while to get back and forth from the island to the lower mainland.

Wasn't CHEK the only Canadian TV station to have dual CBC & CTV affiliation in the 70s? Would like to see a sked in the Classic TV forum (with network name next to each show for this Yankee).

I don't know if they were the only one, as they might have been others. I do know that CKLW-TV / CBET in Windsor carried some CTV programming during the 1970s and 1980s, mainly to fill in American programming on CBC that was blacked out locally.

Between 1969 and 1976, CKCW-TV Moncton's relays in Northern New Brunswick and the Gaspesie ran a split CBC/CTV schedule (primarily CBC in primetime) after the parent station switched to CTV. Those relays became full CTV in fall 1976 when the NB CBC affiliate, CHSJ Saint John, put relays in Campbellton and Miramichi. The Canadian Almanac & Directory still listed the Mont-Blanc/Perce and Mont-Bechervaise/Gaspe stations well into the 80s as CHSJ relays, but I don't recall ever seeing them mentioned on a CHSJ sign-on or sign-off :D

As reported on the Canada TV board, CHEK and CBC aren't only sharing footage, but anchors as well: Parsons will be co-anchoring the evening news at CBUT (replacing Ian Hanomansing, who heads to The National as reporter and substitute anchor), and then hops the Strait to anchor the 10pm news at CHEK.

The CBC's announcement:
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/british-columbia/story/2010/04/12/bc-cbc-tony-parsons-vancouver-news-anchor.html

Almost forgot to mention...CBUT's 6pm news will be simulcast on CHEK as well.

Here's a sampling of CHEK's current schedule...

Monday, April 26

5:00 AM - Infomercials
6:00 - CHEK News at 10 (R)
6:30 - Island 30
7:00 - Religious programming
8:30 - Infomercials
12:00 PM - BC News and Weather Update
5:00 - CHEK News at 5
6:00 - CBC News: Vancouver at 6
6:30 - CHEK News at 6:30
7:00 - Island 30
7:30 - Home Check
8:00 - Movie - Desperately Seeking Susan
10:00 - CHEK News at 10
11:00 - Island 30
11:30 - Nice Fish
12:00 AM - Infomercials

On weekends, CHEK is broadcasting a number of fishing shows (including at least one produced in B.C.), BC News and Weather Updates - and even Hockey Night in Canada from CBC, at least when the Canucks are playing.

I wonder if CHEK will end up picking up any other CBC programming, even Wheel and Jeopardy!.

(As a sidenote, CHEK isn't the first Canadian independent station to pick up another network's NHL games - reportedly low-power CFTV in Leamington, Ontario, which is carried on digital cable in Windsor, has broadcast a few Red Wings games simulcast from FSN Detroit this season. In this case, FSN is not available on the Canadian side of the border, so it's a big coup for CFTV.)
