Victoria's Secret special delayed in Houston

Here in Cleveland, it ran at the time CBS aired it, 10pm ET.

It doesn't surprise me that some affliates would time shift this. Too bad the affliates can't remember that CBS was airing this AFTER 10pm (in most cases), so there is no FCC issue.

If someone is offended by such things, don't watch. There is no reason to ruin it for everyone else who might want to watch.

There was a CBS station in South Carolina, I believe it was WLTX in Columbia, that preempted it altogether, and it aired on the local UPN station instead.

You miss their point...

You misunderstand, seriously!

Those who are offended by such things don't watch.

It's just that they feel it's their God-Given duty to save
your immortal soul (whether you feel you have one or not)
and that you have NO rights except the "right" to conform
to their beliefs.

Did I watch the show?

No.

My wife wouldn't let me.<P ID="signature">______________

WFMY-TV in Greensboro, NC pre-empted the show, CBS offered it to us, and we aired it last night.

Charles Roark, the owner, is crowing all over the place today.

KHOU-11 is in Houston, which is in the Central time zone.

In Houston, the network feed was at 9 P.M. Central time.

Maybe the FCC should adjust the rules in the case of network feeds across multiple time zones.

Such people are offensive.

You poor thing.

You should've told her Ricky Martin was on it. LOL

I DVR'ed it for my wife. Need a copy?? ;)

Thank the Lord for the Underwear Police

Here here!

Every television ever made has the ultimate censorship device--black & white, HDTV, analog, digital, new, old, portable...it's called an OFF button. People need to start using it more.

Moreover, it is inherent in the responsibility of being a parent that you monitor what your kids watch on television, and if you're terribly concerned about the smut on the air, by all means, cancel the satellite, pull the antenna and load up nothing but DVDs of "Davey & Goliath" (a good show, by the way). Is it hard? You betcha.

Every time the Victoria's Secret show has aired, there's been some outcry about how sleazy it is. Heaven forbid we acknowledge that some women like wearing lacy undergarments, and, even more shocking, men like looking at pretty women in lacy undergarments. That doesn't mean they're all pigs and perverts, it means they can enjoy sensuality without...well, without getting their panties in a bunch.

Frankly, I've seen more skin on episodes of "CSI Miami" with the bikinis they wear in the beach scenes, but apparantly lace is bigger problem than lycra. Or there's an issue in that lingerie of the Victoria's Secret style is often equated with sex more directly than cotton bloomers from Hanes. So be it--yes, it's about sex and sexiness. Most of us got here because our parents, grandparents and greatgrandparents all liked sex. Why do cheerleader calendars and swimsuit issues of sports magazines do so well? Because in our screwed up culture, we've become positively oppressive about enjoying sex and sexiness.

No, not everyone is comfortable joking about these kinds of things, and no one should be forced to endure something that makes them uncomfortable in their homes or workplace. But TV...TV is a choice. There are other viewing options, and there are things called books. Just as I wouldn't tell an off-color joke to someone who I didn't know would appreciate it, please keep your desire to impose your definition of "decency" in check. No one is talking about hard-core sex on the screen, just some body parts we all have in one form or another.

One of the greatest ironies I see in the debate over decency is that many people on the right side of the spctrum have been quick to slam the left for opposing President Bush's nominees or policies with the rationale that "we won, get over it." OK, fair enough--more people voted for Mr. Bush than Mr. Kerry. Point taken. But people are voting with their computers and their TV remotes, and they're tuning in to things like the Victoria's Secret show, or HBO's Sopranos & Real Sex, or other titillating fare--not to mention enjoying adult entertainment in their own homes. They've chosen, get over it. If they put on an underwear fashion show and no one watches, guess what--they won't keep parading the panties that seem to bother some folks so much. As long as I'm not coming to your home and taking away your Pat Robertson's greatest hits collection, kindly stay out of my enjoyment of something a little spicier now and then.

And before anyone tries to label me one way or another, here's a news flash--I'll be sitting in the pew worshipping this week, just like I do regularly. Yes, it's possible to be religious and not bound by a Victorian dress code.

I recognize that these decsisions were made by local affiliates, and I'm the first to back up every station's right to decide what they want on their airwaves. So I'm not blasting them--I'm responding to this rediculous obsession with people's private lives, all while kids in our country are starving and sitting in schools without the tools they need to learn. While senior citizens are forced into making cruel decisions about which drug plan to pick, when that may well mean picking between being able to continue taking different necessary drugs. While out national debt balloons to horrific levels not seen since...well, the last time a Bush was in the Oval Office. Despite all that, our esteemed elected representatives are worried that we might see someone's nipple on television. Oh the horror!

That's one of the things that killed the Family Hour rule
back in the '70s. Under the rule, only family-friendly
programming could air 8-9 PM (ET and PT); after 8 PM (CT
and MT) the networks could air as much sex and violence as
was permissible then. The hypocrisy was apparent; that and
First Amendment issues raised by people like Norman Lear
prompted a federal court to overturn the rule.

Nowadays it seems that 8 PM programs are just as raunchy
and/or violent as 10 PM shows, so I wonder if anyone really
cares (beyond the usual self-appointed guardians of the
public morals) whether the Victoria's Secret special
aired at 9 or 10.

Two posts mention WFMY/2 Greensboro, NC and WLTX/19
Columbia, SC. These are sister stations, both owned
by Gannett. I wonder if the other Gannett-owned CBS
stations did the same thing.

Living in WFMY's coverage area, I'm not at all surprised;
the station is very choosy about what it carries (it has
never run any of the access-time tabloid shows, or the
raunchier talk shows like Jerry Springer's, or any daytime
courtroom show except People's Court). One factor in
Channel 2's decision not to carry the Victoria's Secret
special may be that the station manager is a woman, and
she may very well have seen sexism in the program. That
is just a guess on my part. Also, this is a very conservative
area (never mind that there's a Victoria's Secret store at
Four Seasons Mall in Greensboro). I doubt if Channel 2
will get much flack about the pre-emption.

I am surprised that WRAL/5 Raleigh didn't pre-empt.

BTW, the folks at Valley View Mall in Roanoke, VA found
themselves in an awkward situation last week. The spot
where the kids talk to Santa Claus is directly opposite
the Victoria's Secret store there. Mall management put
up a black curtain between Santa and the store so the
kids couldn't see the stuff for sale in the store.
Makes me wonder if WDBJ/7 carried the Victoria's Secret
special.
