Having been born in the Bangor market and with the exception of three years away in 1980-82, I've seen every team of the Bangor news and with an exception of about 1985 or so when current WABI-TV 5 News Director was at WVII, the station has deservedly languished in third place. I have noticed that they are trying, especially in the past year as they started an early morning newscast again.
Now the late news isn't pre-recorded anymore, they're starting a weekend evening newscast again. I say kudos for taking it slow and easy to get it right this time. On a side note, the weather HAS to be local again, this Accuweather from out of state doesn't work.
There's an article in today's Bangor Daily News at:
http://bangordailynews.com/2012/11/...ue-expansion-in-wake-of-anchors-resignations/
You know there are always 3 sides of a story, mine, yours and the truth. We've heard from the anchors, we've heard from management, and in today's article it appears (well at least to me) that more of the real story is getting out. The last paragraph of the story says a lot:
"Still, the mood at WVII-WFVX seems to be on the upswing, according to a few current employees. “Let’s put it this way, the newsroom has been a much happier place the last three days,” Farrar said Friday afternoon."
WVII has been a third place station for, well forever. And when you're third in a three horse race in a market the size of Bangor you can't always do what can be done in a large market. Also from today's article is this fact about viewership for the news in Bangor: In the most recent Nielsen ratings for the Bangor Designated Marketing Area taken last July, WABI-TV, Channel 5, ranked first in average viewers, ages 18 and older, for 6 p.m. Monday-Friday with 36,000. WLBZ-TV had 20,000, and WVII-TV had 2,000. In average number of adult viewers (ages 25-54) from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday-Friday, WABI ranked first at 10,500; WLBZ at 6,300; and WVII at 500.
As a small business owner, tell me honestly how do you sell based on those numbers????? I'm sure those of you who are from larger markets than Bangor must be either looking at those numbers in disbelief or laughing your head off.
With the shellacking GM Mike Palmer took in the blogs and comments on Yahoo this week, I'm curious to see how this all goes forward and I wish WVII and their remaining employees the best of luck.
