Vieira to Head New Daytime Talk Show

One reason, I thought, that she left The Today Show was to care for her sick husband. So if that's the case how come she has the time to host a new talk show but left NBC?

Being host of the Today show was more commitment physically with her having to be on the air early morning.

WNBC group will likely run Meredith Vieira @2, Steve Harvey @3, Ellen @4, with WCAU running everything one hour earlier. However, I don't know what they will run next season with Jeff Probst canceled. Are they picking up The Doctors?

The ABC daytime lineup is in a more uncertain condition. 2/5 'The View' co-hosts will be gone, although Barbara will be there until 2014 likely necessary to ensure a transition again. 'Katie' hasn't proved very successful and likely will just have one year left.

Plus: Most talk shows have reruns June to September. "Today" does not.

The CBS affiliate in Hartford reported on this and said Meridth Vieria's new show would be airing at 11AM on NBC Stations up against The View on ABC. If this is the case WVIT will have to move it's 11AM to Noon and Access Hollywood Live to 2PM replacing The Cancelled Jeff Probst Show. (It will be the 2nd time WVIT moving their news. Their 11AM News originally aired at 10AM until "Today" added the 10AM-11AM Hour")

The only way I could see WMAQ-TV picking up Meredith Vieira's upcoming talk show, is if either Ellen DeGeneres, or Steve Harvey's talk shows were to go off the air, if Days Of Our Lives goes off the air, or WMAQ-TV drops either the Noon news & Extra in the 12 & 12:30pm timeslots, or drop the 4pm airing of Extra & the 4:30pm news. I don't see WMAQ-TV dropping the 4:30pm news, as it seems to do ok for them. It could be possible that WGN-TV could pick up the show, since they currently have Maury repeats at 3pm, & there's uncertainty about The Bill Cunningham Show, since I hear the ratings aren't all that great, though that show has been renewed for another season (2 years on CW & first season on Tribune stations only, making it 3 years technically). Even WCIU could pick up the show too, though I wouldn't know which timeslots would work, since WCIU is independent, & they already carry Trisha, Jerry Springer, Steve Wilkos, & court shows Judge Mathis & People's Court. So far, I believe WGN-TV has the best chance of picking up Meredith. WGN-TV also has an advantage of picking up the show, since they lost Live With Kelly & Michael to WLS-TV, this fall, WGN-TV is adding a 6th hour to their morning newscast at least for now. So if the additional hour of news doesn't work for WGN-TV, they could always try for airing Meredith at 9am. WGN-TV lost the rights to Live after WLS-TV outbid them for the show (WGN-TV's contract was up), & WLS-TV will show Live at 9am for the first time ever (as Live with Regis & Kathie Lee, WLS-TV refused to move Oprah from the 9am timeslot, & only had room for the show in the overnight hours)

I haven't heard this mentioned yet but a somewhat obvious solution, since Couric already works for Disney, is to have her take over for Walters as the lead on the View. She certainly has the credentials and background and has a somewhat similar career trajectory (save for that national news anchor stint) to Walters that she would be an almost natural fit.

Actually, they even have network news anchor in common. Barbara left NBC to be the first female co-anchor of a network newscast (at ABC) with Harry Reasoner. At least as big a disaster as Couric at CBS.

Thanks, I actually forgot about that brief stint of Walters', but at least Couric still is the first solo female network news anchor (after Walters, Chung and Veronica Corningstone's two person anchor teams)

Miss Couric is part-owner of the syndicated-by-Disney "Katie" show. She and Jeff Zucker were hoping for an Oprah-like $$$$ bonanza. After one less-than-stellar season, that seems highly unlikely. Still I can't imagine her tossing in the towel after Season Two to be part of a chatfest -- unless Disney decides to give her a chunk of the revenue.

Couric's talk show is unlikely to be renewed past the 2013-14 season. Walters retires in summer 2014, after May sweeps and the last Katie episode of the season. The timing is actually perfect. Katie's in no position to demand a chunk of The View's revenue.

Whoopi & Sherri Shepherd will be the only 2 hens on "The View" when Joy Behar & Barbara Walters leaves; Elizabeth Hassleback has just bolted for FOX News to replace Gretchen Carlson on the morning news show, "FOX & Friends".

I think Couric for Barbara Walters makes some sense. Katie will need a gig...and the trades say she's unhappy with the direction of her show (remember guys, it's the sponsors, the stations, the production company/syndicator, the executive producer, the producer and then the talent when it comes to direction unless you're Oprah and you own the production company ). It's also a way for ABC to keep her from going back to Today to rescue Matt Lauer. God knows if that would work, but if you're trying to keep Good Morning America in the lead, the last thing you want is to see Katie Couric go back on "Today" with "I screwed up, I should never have left, I'm glad to be home and I love working with Matt."

As for Behar's slot, Meredith Viera, Rosie O'Donnell, Star Jones, Debbie Matenopoulos and Lisa Ling have all been and gone. They know how to replace departing hosts.

Bette Midler lives in Manhattan. She'd be like taking Behar up 10 notches.

There's no way Katie would be happy doing 2-minute scattershot Tepid Topics, interviewing evictees from Dancing With The Stars, having 4-minute legal consultations on whatever legal mess is in the news, and hosting in-show infomercials as they do for roughly 10-15 minutes of each episode. That's about 10000% worse than what her show is now. Plus, I doubt the other hosts would be all that happy to have Katie's hefty ABC salary sitting beside their measly ones. I suppose anything is possible, yet I suspect post-Katie-cancellation, Ms Couric will be given some type of primetime gig, hosting 5-6 specials a year until her contract ends. ABC doesn't own her daytime show, so it has no way to force her onto another show.

I also suspect Katie's personality/ego/salary desired would be too high to just be a co-host. Plus Whoopi, as moderator, would have greater tenure there. If Whoopi was leaving also, then Katie could probably fill as lead co-host, moderator.
