Vikings-Giants game

Nope...not the One True (and friggin' COLD) Rochester, where WUHF's 10 PM news included a lengthy explanation of where to see - and not see - the game Monday night. The "to see" list consisted of "DirecTV, or a local bar," while the "not to see" list was "here on Fox Rochester." Which is not to say that things couldn't change during the day on Monday...

But it may be even colder at the moment in the "hold the Mayo" Rochester than in the
"Mama don't take my Kodachrome away" Rochester. ;)

Here is the link straight from NFL.com
Metrodome unsafe, so Vikings-Giants game moved to Detroit

Regarding NFL Network airing the game from the article linked above:
"NFL Network will re-air the game at midnight ET nationally in its entirety following the live game on Monday night."

That makes sense, at first I thought FOX would show the game over the whole network. But making it a national game would hurt ESPN who has MNF rights. Also did the NFL make the right move by moving the game onto Monday night?

If I was Fox, I'd say no. This was their prime game, with Joe Buck and Troy Aikman. They ended up subbing the Redskins-Bucks game, which wasn't as primo. So they move everyone to Detroit, additional expense of doing a game from a different city with less technical prep than they usually get, and it only airs in two markets. Because of ESPN's exclusive.

ESPN is pissed because they have a crappy game (Baltimore-Houston) and there's another potentially better game available if you look for it, and everyone in NYC will be watching the other game.

So Fox gets something they're technically not entitled to, which is a Monday night game in two major markets. One the other hand, how unfair to the teams might it have been to move Baltimore Houston to Sunday, and give ESPN the Giants Minnesota game?

...if the Wilf Brothers have any sense at all, they'd move the Vikings to Los Angeles or San Antonio. It's not as if a Minneapolis franchise hasn't moved to L.A. or a Texas town before ;D ...

What say could Fox have in this? The roof ripped, the stadium couldn't hold the event. The NFL had no choice but to find an alternate site.

But look at the bright side. Fox got perhaps the coolest video of a Metrodome collapse EVER - from two angles, yet. Whomever kept those cameras hot and the recorder running should get a raise.

As to the additional expense, seeing as they already had a crew already staged in Motor City for Sunday's game, and I figure they weren't heading home until at least Monday anyway, it's a wash. Plus, one more day's rental of the truck is probably not going to matter much.

New York viewers got the Packers/Lions matchup...

By the way: Joe Buck is scheduled to call another Giants game? Why does that not shock me one bit?

Does anybody remember if two NFL games have ever been scheduled in prime time before?

In 2005, a game involving the New Orleans Saints and the New York Giants were moved to NYC on September 19, delayed from the previous day, due to the Superdome still unavailable due to Hurricane Katrina... It also happened twice before that -- in 1987 (a Vikings / Broncos game moved from Sunday to Monday, due to Game 7 of the World Series involving the Twins), and 1997 (Dolphins / Bears, also involving World Series Game 7, this time with the Marlins at home).

Additionally, there was a Dolphins/Steelers game being moved to primetime on a Sunday night due to a hurricane. I vaguely recall Ben Roethlisberger, in his rookie season, making his way through a muddy field en route to a Pittsburgh victory.

Yeah, they said that video was taken at 5am. Why were there cameras and tape rolling at that hour, unless it was some type of security camera?

Hi-def security camera? My guess is that Fox engineers were doing some early-morning equipment setup. IIRC, they said that nobody was in the stadium at the time, so maybe the engineers were in the truck. I can't believe they'd leave the tape running overnight, or have a hard drive big enough to record that much time.

Yeah, except they can't. One of the conditions of the team's sale to Wilf was that he was NOT allowed to move the team, period.

So, in order to move the team to LA, it's going to have to be sold. Not a smart move when you think about it.

And the backlash on that would be HUGE. Even though we are sucking this year and our season is over, that game was a sellout on Sunday. The team still rakes in the bucks, they just want a new stadium so that it can rake in even MORE.

Personally, I think that given the collapse of the roof, chances of a new stadium being built have just increased.

Here in Pennsylvania I guess we are all Conspiracy Theorists.

Back when the big debate was going on about state funding for new
stadiums in Pittsburgh and Philly, the outcome of which was very much
in doubt, two critical events made an impact.

- a cinder block wall at Three Rivers Stadium inexplicably crumbled on national
TV during a Steelers game.

- a portion of the stands at the Vet in Philadelphia collapsed on national TV
in the middle of the Army-Navy game.

People around here are all convinced that representatives of (ahem) groups
affiliated with the local construction unions played a part in making those things happen
in front of national TV audiences.

Guess when you have New Jersey for a next-door neighbor you begin to think this way.

I'm just sayin'....

Why is Fox not entitled to a game that they would have carried yesterday if it had been possible? This was not a nationally-televised game. Sunday Ticket subscribers outside of the Twin Cities and NYC markets also paid for this game as part of their package. They have the right to see what they paid for.

Too bad for the Eastern Seaboard Partisan Network. This was an emergency situation and they'll just have to deal with losing viewership in Market #1. I don't know if they'll have to give back some money to their advertisers since they will probably be losing eastern New York and half of New Jersey completely, but if they do, that's just too bad.

But now, maybe the folks in Minneapolis will finally either (1) get a new stadium for the Vikings, or (2) keep the Metrodome Mall of America Field, but get rid of the gas-bag roof and install new lights - maybe in the style of Wrigley Field rather than on tall towers (depending on what would work).

ALL of the primary and secondary markets for the Vikings and Giants should be getting the game. This means places like Hartford/New Haven, Duluth, Fargo, Grand Forks and perhaps Binghamton and Syracuse.

That they are not getting the game tells you just what creeps the people who run the NFL are. I understand why they don't have nationwide distribution of the game - I get that. But markets which would have gotten that game anyway should be included.

They're entitled to the game, just not the day and time. The NFL is peculiar that way. I'm surprised the NFL didn't insist it start at 4PM.

Even though the NFL may be crazy, they're probably not stupid, as most people are either still working or in traffic on the way home at that hour.

Hey Freddy, a few of my "associates" are gonna pay you a visit later to discuss your "sense of humor". We'll see whose laughing then funny boy. Badda-bing!!

So where will the rest of the Vikings' home games take place 'til the damage gets fixed?

They expect it to be repaired by next Monday's game vs Da Bears. But if it isn't, I would think they'd play at the new University of Minnesota field.

The game against The Bears is the last home game of the season, so after next Monday there isn't anything to worry about.
