VIKKI LOCKE: the all-time Atlanta female co-host?

As it gets closer to her retirement, it begs the question: Has there ever been a high-profile morning show in Atlanta where the female was as integral to the show's success as Vikki? A show where the woman's mic was as 'important' as the man's?

I grant you that there have been some who have come close. Women like: Lorna Love, Yetta Levitt, Leslie Fram, Carol Blackman (sp?). But the male voice has always been the quarterback, the punch line, the moderator and the Voice That Counts. If the male wanted to change topics or even go to break in the middle of her thought, he pretty much did (and still does) that.

Vikki has struck me as a 50-50 partner with Steve (not financially but thats another story) for several years and has not squandered the opportunity to shine. I think she goes down in history as the most influential female in Atlanta morning radio history.

No. Vicki was the traffic/news voice that Steve was kind enough to add to his show after many years. Not at all on the same level. If she is influential I'm not sure who she is influencing?

Fram is far more accomplished in that she is in a position to put herself on the air. Not that I like her talent or listen to the show.

Doesn't Melissa Carter has a syndicated national show that she hosts?

How about Kathy Fischman, working alongside the "mellowed" Bobby Harper at WSB-AM in the 80's. IIRC, first in the afternoons, then mornings.

I chuckle everytime I read that subject line.

How about SSS?

Having been the guy who hired Yetta, I have (and had) the utmost respect for her ability, but in fairness to Ms Locke, Yetta's run with Gary McKee was of much shorter duration and Yetta was a news anchor... not exactly a co-host.

Regardless of one's personal taste, it's hard to argue with success, and Vikki's career has been remarkable.

Totally agree with the post above...Vikki Locke is a class act both on the air and off the air. She has had a great career in radio. I would personally like to see more of her on television - always liked the stints she would do on local television.

It's nice to read that others appreciate what she brought to Atlanta radio.

I have to be honest, I would NOT consider her for the title.

While she is usually friendly and professional in her delivery, there are at least two times she launched into a tirade on-air that left me embarrassed for her and for Steve and made me tune them out.

The most memorable one for me was her miscarriage. Months earlier, she announced she was preagnant, then told nothing on air. A caller called in and asked for an update, and she screamed/yelled at they poor guy on air, basically ripping him a new one that was very uncalled for.

While I applaud her longevity, her rants anywhere else would NOT have been tolerated.

I think if I could only count 2 bad shows in 17 years, I'd consider that a victory.
