Village People Lead Singer Victor Willis Dies at 74

Victor Willis was the one who claimed there was "nothing gay" about the song YMCA

Donald Trump hailed the song for helping him win votes as he branded the track the "gay national anthem", despite the Village People denying the link to their song. The pop group even threatened legal action against those who say or allude to it being a homosexual song.

Victor wasn't gay, but his co-writer and co-founder of the band, Jacques Morali, was. In fact he died of AIDS in the 90s. The band got its start playing gay bath houses in NY's Greenwich Village.

For quite a few years the group was actually fronted by Ray Simpson, brother of Valerie Simpson from Ashford and Simpson, as Willis was battling his drug addiction. Eventually Willis recovered and won a legal battle to get control of the group's IP. Simpson and a number of other performers who were part of the group's lineup over the years, were likewise not gay. Willis' signature voice stands out on those recordings though. R.I.P.
