Vintage Phoenix News Clips on YouTube

That is John Gibson on some of the NewsCenter 10 opens from the 80's. Also the tag on the NewsCenter 10 Christmas promo is Jim West who was also on KNIX radio for years. Jim was the image voice at channel 10 when it was KTSP in the mid-80's.

Linda Alvarez must have just arrived at 12 from NBC in Chicago - her delivery seemed a bit awkward, typical of an inexperienced newsreader (she did weekend weather and general assignment reporting while at WMAQ-TV; I don't remember her ever anchoring in Chicago).

And, we see Dewey Hopper in his prime. Unfortunately, the after-effects of the stroke he suffered a few years ago are readily apparent when one listens to him read the news on KPHX 1480 (his current gig). The energy is there considering his age (pushing 70?) and health, but the voice, sadly, isn't.

While the "Ahl-varr-ez" pronunciation was similar, it sounded to me more
like "Linda" than "Leeenda."

"Big hair" on most--very 70s.

Physical weather map on the wall--no blue (or green) screen. And
that hideous B&W wide shot sat map that was hours old when it aired
(came down on the closed-circuit afternoon news feed).

Chroma-key city with a lot of generic graphics. Noticed at least one
"change slide on the air in the key"...well, at least that's not as bad
as mirror-flopping from slide to film (or vice-versa) on the same chain,
especially if it was an RCA.

A lot of film still in use--just a few years into the minicam era.

Giant fonts! What was that, a Vidifont Mk I?

I'm sure some of us recognized a few names in the credits.

I didn't realize Steve Pascente had been at KTAR/KPNX so long. Apparently, he graduated from ASU in 1977, so in that clip, he was still barely out of school.

I recognized one name and emailed the link. He writes back "awesome!. How did you find this?"
As for the Vidifont reference, there are times I would prefer Vidifont/Viditext OVER Chyron.
Vidifont was very user friendly and would be great for very small production shops.
 
Speaking of local newspeople before they came to Phoenix:

Here's one of Linda Alvarez while she was in Chicago at WMAQ-TV. In 1974, she co-hosted a program on Saturday evenings called Sorting It Out. The segment she introduced in this YouTube clip was about the WMAQ transmitter and it was easy to tell how green she was.

BTW, her replacement on that show was Shelly Long, later of Cheers.

Pretty high-tech stuff!

I loved the computer at the beginning -- looked like a cousin of R2-D2's. But the guy introing Linda with the plaid pants was the best! :eek:

While I'll joke about Katie Raml, I don't she's anywhere as bad as that video of Liz Habib. Just watching the metamorphous from WKYC to KTVK to KCOP is scary.

Yep, you're right Brian. Sure seems to fit the morphed Liz Habib in that video.

Katie Raml may look like she's made up for Halloween most nights and has her ethics problems, but she isn't close to being in the same cesspool (aka L.A.) that Liz has evidently slipped down into. Yuck! :p
