Vintage Phoenix News Clips on YouTube

There's actually proof now that the NMSA has the KTVK themes of the mid-80s ordered wrong. The "KTVK 1986 News Theme" was used AFTER the other theme, and the 1987 theme was used in 1986.

Still, we now also have some close samples from KPNX in 1986 (plus a promo, which is related musically); KPNX Action News stuff, including opens that Charlie Van Dyke DIDN'T voice (!); a few things from KTSP and KSAZ (up to 2000, the last Phoenix open he probably has); a KYMA sample of The Great News Package (if they still use it, they're the last bastions!); and precious KTVK samples from the Eyewitness News era (generating two NMSA entries!); overall, we're really looking good on music samples.

The "1987 Theme" was also used prior to the "NewsChannel 3" branding, when KTVK was still "Eyewitness News." It appears they briefly used that theme during the early days of the Bill Miller/Phil Alvidrez era in '86.

We're getting really close to being able to date when KTVK's Arizona's News People theme debuted...

Feb 16, 1989. 11am newscast open. E-skip received from 838 miles away in Texas, thus the quality. But there's no doubting what it is. (Plus, there's a PSA and a bit of ads.)

Plus, Royal Norman!

Please, someone post some old KOOLNEWS10 stuff from the Bill Close/Mary Jo West era. I always loved that news open. Good stuff !!!

And speaking of Bill Close, does anyone -- ANYONE -- have footage of that Friday night in May 1982 when KOOL cut into Falcon Crest to show Joe Gwin holding Bill Close hostage? That was unforgettable.

The theme for that open can't be Gari's News Station...they had to have used this for a brief time in 1992 (KPNX commissioned News Station that year, too - and stations had picked it up by 1993 (WIXT Syracuse, now WSYR - still using it today!)). It's also likely that their use of their 1990-vintage TVbD music and graphics had ended by this point (the only open we know with that package is from February 1992).

KPNX in the NMSA should read:

...Hello News, _ until 1986 (I'd guess 1981 or 1982 for the switch to Hello)
KPNX 1986 News Theme*, 1986 until 1990 (at the least - see TVbD's 1990 demo reel)
KCTV 1992 News Theme**, 1990 until 1992
KPNX 1992 News Theme***, 1992 until 1992
News Station, 1992 until 2004 ...

*This is an image package, too - titled "We're Going Where You're Going". Yet the NMSA has not changed its name.
**Did TVbD do music, too? If so, they probably made this...(the same 1990 demo reel had KCTV on it - but they used it into 1993 at least)
***New theme package

Raymie --

I was in Phoenix in 1983 and definitely remember that the "Hello News" theme was in use at that time on KPNX! It was funny because I didn't realize that it was being used all over the country. My previous exposure was in Providence, RI at WPRI with "Hello Rhode Island". I remember it because both are Channel 12. Darn it, now, I'm going to hum this stupid theme all afternoon... :D :D ... "Makes no difference where I go...you're the best hometown I know...hello <insert city..."

Could it be that KPNX used a special theme just for the 6PM news open? I believe thet KTVK also used an abbreviated 6PM open with a different theme for a while before the affiliation switch.

Oh yeah. You want Phoenix news opens (and a couple from Tucson) from the late 1990s? A movement to stop bilingual education has your ticket. Much of this is from KPHO's First News era and KNXV in 2000. This WILL generate a new NMSA entry for sure.

NewsActive3's news open collection has expanded yet again, and there are three Phoenix opens in a very quirky collection:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6KYm2y0l-s

Blink after the KATC open and you might miss the very short ABC News 15 at Ten open from 1995-96 (or so).

And at 2:18 in the clip, get ready for a time warp to 1992, when KTSP had just commissioned a major station rebrand, dropped NewsCenter 10, and began using 615's Pinnacle (in what would be its final two years under that callsign). There is a lot of good time-lapse photography of Phoenix, actually. Stay tuned for a one-minute long, unforgettable circa-1990s San Francisco weather promo after the KTSP opens!

There are even more Phoenix news bones to pick:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5N0FgrCIhmg (2:05): "News 5 is a part of the past, the present, and the future of Arizona" – 1988 news promo for the Downey/Turley/Cochran team. "Weekdays at 11:30 and every night at 9:30." Also: a riveting KTSP news promo (they once sent their correspondents throughout the world!?) and Diane Ryan newsbreak (she's still there!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYKangZqJeU (8:15): KNXV News 15 at 10, January 1, 2002 (with odd news theme)

Cameron Harper evidently made a second layover in Phoenix between his KTVT and WPTY stints. The dating is easy: "Happy New Year", Bin Laden news stories, and (on the L3 at the end of the KNXV clip) not News 15, but ABC 15 News (which they adopted TV by Design gave them and WMAR a major refresh later in the year). The NMSA now is missing three different news themes for KNXV.

I actually like this older promo for KPNX:

...which is similar to this:

.
...and I'm not sure how many other stations this.

That was a successful promotional campaign from Gari Communications, used by local stations in the US and Canada.

Here is the audio of the version that I heard as a teenager, from WOKR 13 Rochester NY (now WHAM-TV), as posted by Philip Dampier. Unfortunately, he didn't have the video that went with the promo. A crawl lists the numerous stations that used the "Hello News" campaign.

I spent a summer at ASU in the early 80's and definitely remember the "Hello Phoenix/Arizona" campaign on 12 (KPNX). Back at my college in Providence, RI, channel 12 (WPRI) had the "Hello Rhode Island" campaign. Being originally from Seattle, none of the stations there adopted the "Hello" theme.
