I have uploaded a rare piece of the early history of WFAN-New York in its 1050 period (1987-88). This is Pete Franklin, who was supposed to be the station's #1 personality when they started up but who flopped badly in New York and was let go after two years to make way for Mike Francesa and Chris Russo. What's amazing is how in this early history of WFAN they were doing things like having a newscast (using Mutual stories) which can be heard in this as well.

WFAN was originally WHN, and the previous owner was Mutual. In fact, if you'd go out to the old transmitter site by the Meadowlands in those days, you'd see a Mutual satellite dish outside. It's possible that an affiliation to the news network was part of the sales agreement for a couple years, ensuring a NYC clear for the content and spots.
 
Thanks, that would explain that and would mean that newscasts only disappeared with the move to 660 (save for those in Imus's slot).
