Virgin Beat - HD RADIO

While I've "heard" and agree that HD radio is better technically, for the average Joe, there's no good reason to switch over.

The old saying that "you've got to give them a good reason" to switch is so very true. Here's what I see as issues:

HD radio's problem is 3-fold:

1) the average person's radio is "just fine" right now, therefore why switch?

2) Consumer confusion over HD (DTV) television and the fact that when people hear "HD" they think TV, NOT radio.

3)HD Radio is still more $$ expensive. The industry needs to give me a better reason to throw my perfectly good analog radio out the window! (This is directed at the avg consumer)

Good points here radioplayer!...

...the technology here would possibly be called a 'luxury' -

- but as to what 'KIND' of a lux remains to be defined

HD Radio will take longer to become Ubiquitous (ironic, huh?) than the Internet Radio. Years of fighting over standards and delaying investment into this have cost everything. HD Radio is DEAD FORMAT WALKING.

Problems:

RECEPTION. Dirty little secret. HD pops on an off to analog signal, rendering HD2 signals useless in the car. How important is the car?

QUALITY. Dirty little secret 2. The codec's used are "OK", better than SatRadio, but far from the HD experience branded by HDTV. It is a "Let Down".

All the major companies should shut the whole thing down and announce that HD RADIO is MOVING ONLINE. Benefits: Unlimited channels, constantly improving quality, and a chance the get in front of the new inevitable distribution model.

HD Radio has SOME possibilities, but not too many. In the current climate of radio with everybody cutting back on human staffers, HD will never be much more than a $500 personally unprogrammable MP3 player.

The public stations seem to be making better use of it than the commercial stations.

HD radio will NEVER get off the ground if nothing TRULY exciting is put on it to make it WORTH the expense...

And FORGET HD on AM radio.... Even shortwave is less annoying....

It doesn't pop in and out for me unless I'm well removed from the metro area. Perhaps, the station(or stations)is doing something wrong!

Doesn't help that the HD alliance is created by the major companies...but by the UPPER BRASS in the companies. So when edicts come down to PROMOTE YOUR COMPETITOR's HD STREAM (because you have to) it causes a bit of indigestion among the program directors. BRILLLLLLLLIANT!!!
