Virginia Tech massacre coverage

First off, my thoughts and prayers go out to all who were affected by this awful tragedy today in Blacksburg.

What has the coverage been like around the state? My guess is that it's obviously heaviest, if not wall-to-wall, in the places in and around Blacksburg and Roanoke.

After hearing of this (I'm in Pennsylvania) I put on several of the stations from Roanoke that stream. WSLC was running coverage that I believe was a local tv feed; I put on the streaming video of the NBC affiliate and they said the audio was on several Clear Channel stations including WROV and WYYD, also noting that power had been knocked out by winds in the area so the coverage was available to those without power but with battery radios.

Given the cutbacks in local radio station news operations these days, having an affiliation with a local tv news outlet for events like this is a good idea.

I'm at the airport now flying back to Orlando, so I really wasn't able to watch TV until I was here. Most of the airport is hooked up to CNN, and they were posting a lot of shots from WSLS from earlier in the day.

NPR had very good news coverage in the area. WVTF was still broadcasting NPR's feed as of 9:00 pm when they were out of my range, WCVE-FM was broadcasting coverage until this evening when they went to classical music at the normal time. The WMRA network acted as if it did not happen, the normal broadcast schedule was in place. WUVT (VT's campus station) has a stream that has been swamped. As of writing I cannot connect to it. Ditto with WVTF AND Radio IQ.

Out-of-market commercial radio was (at best) weak. CC Richmond was off air much of the day, no coverage there. Besides the news/talk stations, nothing I could hear in Richmond about it.

TV Wise: All the Richmond, Charlottesville, and Lynchburg/Roanoke stations were broadcasting live with much of their own feed. WVIR/ NBC-29 had a mic setup in Blacksburg but used the network feed. Other stations I saw were WCYB 5/Bristol, WTTG 5/Washington, WXII 12/Winston-Salem, and WHSV 3/Harrisonburg.

My thoughts go out to the folks at Tech. I have a few friends who go there.

Starting tomorrow morning, XM Radio is going to uplink WFIR and WXLK to their satellites to get the local angle broadcast nationally.

Any idea what channel #'s they'll be on?

VT can do all the damage control they want, but when the smoke clears, they;ll be plenty of questions that will need better answers.POOR job of handling this entire situation.Hell they just had a shooting awhile back, did they not learn ANYTHING from it??

From someone who grew up in Wytheville, but now lives in East Tennessee, I just want to say that my heart goes out to Virginia Tech. I don't know if anyone saw this or not, but UVA's administration has encouraged their students and faculty to wear maroon and orange to show their support for Tech in this difficult time. As someone who has grown up as a Wahoo fan, I agree with this move and I think that UVA speaks for every other Virginian when they and we say that we hold Tech in our hearts and prayers.

Of the big three in Richmond, I think that WTVR-TV/WRIC-TV was tied for the best coverage, with WTVR leading just by a tad...WWBT-TV, in my opinion, did the worst job of them all.
