Virtually pointless translator in Huntsville?

Okay, I looked on the FCC site and viewed the contour maps for 106.1 WTAK in Huntsville and the translator that they are broadcasting on 106.5. From what I can see the only additional coverage that 106.5 gives is a little further to the north to cover Hazel Green and Meridianville. Being from near that area, I can pick up 106.1 very clear.

106.1: http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM191234.html
106.5: http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FX421113.html

Anybody know why this translator exists? Is Clear Channel trying to keep another close signal blocked out? This just seems like another case of wasted space on Huntsville's FM dial. I'm not the most experienced radio guy in the world, so if someone could help provide some insight as to the purpose of this translator, I would appreciate it.

Well, a translator isn't protected by anything so if someone filed an upgrade or move-in and it would voerlap the translator, the translator would hafta go buh bye.

WSKZ Chattanoga, while doesn't put much of a signal into Huntsville but could probably be heard in some areas if people wanted to. Maye they are using 106.5 to keep people from listening to that??

There is a stretch along Moores Mill Rd, and many spots along hwy 72, where WSKZ had a quite listenable signal even on a walkman. W293AH is transmitting from 2 or so miles from the stretch of Moores Mill. Before the translator came about, I was actually able to hear KZ 106 all the way to Athens in the car. It still has some spots where it will come in, I can get it very well with my outdoor antenna pointed to Chattanooga, and there is a spot on the north side of Drake Mountain (where Bob Wade runs through and curves around) that it overpowers the translator.

I've always thought that to be the purpose of the translator.
