Visiting Again Soon

Anything happening in Hawaii radio? This board is like visiting a library; it's so quiet. Is KPOI still the Big Kahuna? Are there any voids? (Ed if you're reading this, know your e-mail box is next on my list! Besides, this time I may need the write off...) PLEASE POST SOMETHING, SOMEONE! I'd love to know who's worth a listen when in Honolulu and who might just make me smile. :)

Just came back from Oahu (first time there, it was awesome.) Ok, my takes:

Coming from San Francisco which has a surplus of Classic Rock, it was refreshing to have a more upbeat dial. Also it was refreshing to hear so many stations live during all dayparts! It was like stepping back into Bay Area radio a decade earlier. A glut of AC's on both bands. KSSK has a pretty wide variety, although I preferred the more upbeat Krater 96. Lite 94.7 had Delilah, which is weird when those dedications were at least six hours old. KRTR-AM an Easy Listening station on a 50kw stick was interesting, but obviously a jukebox.

KQMQ (93.1) was another fave of mine. It's the closest thing to Jack-FM on the island. All upbeat hits from the late '70s - today. Not classic rock based like the typical Variety Hits outlet. Interesting transitions like CeCe Peniston into J. Geils Band. Or hearing Anna Nalick, Salt & Pepa, Lifehouse, Mariah Carey, Def Leppard (from their new album) in the same hour. Slowed down at night, though.

Rock, preferred Star 101.9 which is Alternative, but a soft one (heard Los Lonely Boys and Matchbox 20 in my sample.) KPOI now at 105.9 sounds a lot like the Classic Rockers back home. Hip-Hop; preferred Power 104.3 over heritage KIKI and KDDB.

Listened to a lot of Island 98.5. It seemed to be the most accessable station to someone who never really heard Hawaiian music. Heard Bob Marley, UB40 and that got me into listening. Noticed a tight rotation (heard the same Hawaiian songs a lot in limited listening.) But that was my station when I was on the beach. KCCN-FM and Hawaiian 105 were also pretty good.

Noticed the tour buses seemed to be tuned into Krater 96, Island 98.5 or Hawaiian 105. Stores that didn't have their own Muzak had Krater 96 on. Is this a trend?

Format Holes: No CHR/Pop, Country on FM or AAA. Don't know if they would do well in Honolulu. With all the Hip-Hop, would a station that played 70s-90s R&B work? And with all the AC's, could Smooth Jazz work?

>Hey Tim!
Thanks for the comprehensive answer. If you're a PD, It looks like you'd be great to work with and if you're a jock, I'm impressed even more!
Anyway, It sure is nice to see some activity on this board. I was also surprised by the lack of Country on the FM dial on my last 2 visits, but what do I know? I'm not living there, yet... (see previous posts--same senerio now)
The Star was about as 'young' as my musical tastes run. They did a very nice job keeping it upbeat during the day, sometimes a bit much, especially for my hubby's mature ears. I loved the classic rock presentation I sampled at KPOI. The afternoon jock was pretty smooth, too.
On a previous visit they had a CR BOB station. It disappeared before it was allowed to grow into a money maker with personalities. Can you imagine the promos; Breakfast on the Beach, Bands on the Beach, Bad-ass Biker Bash on the Beach, ala GGGeorge Thorogood--BBBoB!?!
I also enjoyed the 'Live' quotient. (IMHO there's not enough of that here in Sacramento.) I think personality radio still has a chance to win over a 'canned' or sattelite presentation...
Wow! I'm getting excited! I can't wait for my visit!
Thanks again for your answer. :)

I'm glad that Cox purchased AM 650 and changed the format to Easy Listening. KRTR AM 650 has the same playlist as WDUV/Tampa. When KUMU AM 1500 dropped Adult Standards in June 2004 after being purchased by Visionary Related Entertainment, I was devastated. When AM 650 flipped to Easy Listening in January 2005 after being purchased by Cox, I was ecstatic. I swear to God I'll never take KRTR AM 650 for granted. I really appreciate the Easy Listening format.

Also, in some parts of Oahu, I can pick up KIPA AM 620 from the Big Island. KIPA AM 620 recently signed on with Adult Standards from ABC Stardust "Timeless Classics". I won't take that station for granted either.<P ID="signature">______________
